The Singing Islands

The Singing Islands are hundreds of small islands scattered between Ter Eira and the Illirian mainland. Geological evidence suggests that each island was once part of Ter Eira. The name Singing Islands comes from the presence of holes dug throughout the rocks by icebores that produce a haunting, flute-like sound when hit with the frequent winds the islands experience. The Islands are often described by mainlanders as another world entirely, home to alien creatures and cultures. Indeed, travelers often describe the otherworldly beauty of the Dancing Lights made manifest as humanoid spirits, the haunting songs of the wind, the mighty walls of the ice city Nugroth Nor, the strange rituals of Wind Dance shamans, and the otherworldly howling of the Wind Gates. At least since The Time of Elves, the same peoples have lived on the Islands, including the Caronorn Halflings, Yaunuk Humans, Orcanos Orcs, and the now-extinct Acundi Elves. Ever since the independence of Ter Eira, the Singing Islands have been a place of strife as The Empire and Ter Eira wage proxy wars for individual islands, often playing on existing tensions between the local groups.

Geography

The islands are hilly and often forested. Large rock formations can make sailing between some of the smaller islands nearly impossible. Most of the islands overlook the ocean for miles at their highest points. Beneath the islands, underwater caves lead deep under the ocean and kelp and coral forests stretch endlessly.

Fauna & Flora

The Singing Islands are home to creatures such as wolves, bears, seals, walrus, reindeer, penguins, puffins, remorhaz, ice bores, and drakes. The waters around the islands hold whales, sharks, serpents, crabs, and even krakens.   Plant life is surprisingly abundant as well, as magical wellsprings allow for the growth of trees and other tall plants even in this tundra. Giant mushrooms grow on some islands, and the kelp forests below the waters are legendary among natives of the islands for their dangers.

Natural Resources

The Singing Islands are the only known source of steelwood in the world. Furs, ivory, kelp, and ice radishes are commonly exported. Whale products such as bone and oil are also produced here.
