Princess Sieghild

Sieghild, known as "Battle-Born", is the last remaining member of the Forsberg family, the ruling dynasty of the Kingdom of Ordayn, and rightful heir to the throne currently being usurped by her cousin, King Rordin. At the end of the Northern Conquests and the commencement of the Imperial occupation, those members of the nobility loyal to the crown took her into hiding. She has since become one of the central members of the Northern Resistance and is one of the most hunted-for individual in North Erru.   Background
Although Sieghild's childhood was not always an easy one, it was, by-and-by, a happy one. She was born during a period of tenuous peace; the second Northern Conquest had ended 20 years prior, leaving Ordayn as the only nation in North Erru not yet under the yoke of the Empire. Her grandmother, Queen Theoda, had offered sanctuary to hundreds of exiles from Jorland and Merelia, including several prominent wizards who were at the forefront of the fledgling Northern Resistance movement. Her father and mother, Prince Einr and Princess Gudrune, were almost constantly away on raids, attacking Imperial supply lines in Merelia and Ravernorne, doing everything they could to sabotage the Empire's plans to invade Ordayn. The Princess actually gave birth to Sieghild in their war-camp during one such raid, and so folk called her "Battle-Born" from that day onward.   When she was just two years old, her mother was killed fighting with the Resistance in Jorland. Her grandmother, Queen Theoda, took on the task of raising her while her son, Prince Einr, was busy with his guerrilla campaign in the South. Given the Prince's warlike tendencies, she understood that it would likely be his daughter who would next wear the crown. And so she set about preparing her for to assume the throne.     She kept her granddaughter close at all times, having her sit in meetings with members of the Carthing, taking her along on visits to the estates of Earls, even allowing her to watch when she passed judgement upon criminals. She also hired for her a riding instructor from Sudyria, a scholar of magical lore from Edelothan, and had her personal housecarl, the half-orc Gurghran, train her in the use of sword, axe and bow. Although she was harsh with her at times, the Queen had a deep, genuine affection for her granddaughter, who she called "her little foxhound.", and Sieghild, for her part, was utterly devoted to the Queen, as both granddaughter, heir, and subject.   The years of training the Queen instilled in her would come to use far sooner than she would have liked, when in the summer of 3011 P.A., shortly before Sieghild's 14th birthday, the Midaevian Empire invaded Ordayn with a massive force. Prince Einr had died one year earlier during an attack on an Imperial supply caravan, where they had been ambushed by a pair of Iron Knights on the backs of dragons. And so, when it came time to depart, and knowing that their odds of victory were slim, Queen Theoda left her crown with Sieghild, with instructions that should she die in battle, her granddaughter would immediately be crowned Queen, and then taken into hiding. Sieghild refused to be left behind, and tried to escape Skaldenburg and ride after the Queen and her warriors. In the end, Gurghran, who had been been appointed to protect her in the event the Queen died in battle, had to fight a brief duel with her to stop her leaving, before knocking her out and locking her in her bedchamber.   As the Queen had feared but predicted, the battle went disastrously for the Ordaynians, and Theoda herself was killed by a ballista bolt. Kanthus Jorge, the Queen's court wizard, sent word back to Skaldenburg shortly before he too was killed by an Iron Dragon's fire breath. Acting on the Queen's instructions, a coronation ceremony was hastily prepared. The city's High Priest of Storhim was summoned, and Gurghran and the Earl of Rorgland stood as witnesses. Tears glistening on her cheeks, Sieghild was shepherded into the King's Hall, ready to assume the throne.   However, in an act of treachery, the High Priest, having been bought by the Empire who promised to make him the new Bishop of Skaldenburg under the Church of the Four Gates, tried to murder Sieghild by stabbing her just as he was lowering the crown onto her head. If not for the years of training she had received from Gurghran, the knife would have plunged straight into her heart. As it was, she managed to deflect the thrust at the last moment, and was stabbed in the shoulder instead, before Gurghran leapt to her side, grabbed the High Priest and snapped his neck.   At the same moment of the attempted assassination, a dozen Imperial agents emerged from the shadows, blades drawn. The old but hale Earl of Rorgland drew his sword and commanded Gurghran to get the Princess to safety. The big half-orc abandoned formality and tossed the injured Princess over his shoulder, knocking two assassins out of his way while the Earl gave his life holding them back long enough to allow the pair to escape.   After a night-time ride along the coast, they finally rendezvoused with Ordaynian loyalists, who took the pair into hiding with the Northern Resistance. In the wake of the assassination attempt, the new regime under King Rordin claimed that the Princess had been killed by the Earl of Rorgland, justifying the seizure of his lands, and labelled Gurghran a traitor, all of which was meant to goad Princess Sieghild out of hiding. However, since the midnight ride from Skaldenburg, there has been no sight of her anywhere in Ordayn. Indeed, despite rumours to the contrary, many believe that the Princess died of her injuries, and until she shows her face, hope for her return will only continue to diminish.
