Midaevian Empire
For the past 800 years, the Empire of Midaevia has maintained its position as the most militarily, politically and economically powerful force in the known world. Beginning as nothing more than a single settlement of violent religious zealots, over the course of one hundred years it began a period of aggressive expansion, invading dozens of neighbouring tribes, kingdoms and nations. After every victory the conquered peoples were faced with a choice; submission and conversion, or resistance and destruction.
Facing obliteration, many chose the former, and were swiftly assimilated into the racially and culturally diverse Imperial society. Those who opted to convert were welcomed with open arms into the faith, and as Imperial citizens enjoyed a wide variety of benefits, including healthcare, education, modern infrastructure, reliable work and a firm but fair justice system.
Those who chose defiance were ground to dust beneath the steel-shod feet of the Imperial Banner, their civilisation wiped from existence.
The Imperial Dynasty
At the heart of the ideology on which the foundations of the Empire have been at two core tenements; worship of the Elder One, and loyalty to His representative on the Material Plane, the Emperor. To your average Imperial citizen, the Emperor as akin to a living god, proof of the Empire's divine right to dominate all the peoples of the known world. As the Emperor is considered a direct conduit to the Elder One, service to the Empire is considered a form of prayer.
The responsibility for the nurture and maintenance of the Imperial Dynasty falls upon the shoulders of the Royal Chamberlain, Head of the Imperial Household. It is they who procure and oversee the Royal Harem, and once the Emperor selects which of their children to designate as Heir, they are responsible for seeing to it they are properly prepared to assume the throne on the occasion of the Emperor's death. As the Elder One is not believed to take any specific form, the Emperor is not bound to a specific gender or race; so long as they are part of the original bloodline. As a consequence of this, and due to the sheer variety of species that have filled the ranks of the Royal Harem over the course of its history, the heritage of the person of the Emperor is almost as diverse as the races that make up the Empire itself.
Of course, such a cacophony of mingled species in a single individual can occasionally have some unintended side affects, but the Imperial Praefects of the Imperial Household are always on-hand to magically rectify any unusual genetic quirks before they negatively affect a future Emperor's development.
