Imperial Banner

The army of the Empire is the largest in the known world, as well as the most advanced in terms of equipment, training and logistics. At its heart is a corps of hardened, professional veterans, loyal to the Emperor, known as the Imperial Banner. The Banner is composed of multiple legions, each with their own units of cavalry, heavy infantry, skirmishers, and specialists. These legions are supplemented as needed by a number of different regional auxiliary forces, which can include provincial militias assembled in a matter of days, the standing armies of vassal kings, and even the slave-soldiers of wealthy merchant-barons.   Within the banner legions are a number of particularly potent units. Each legion includes a contingent of Bombarders; enslaved, armored ogres who carry huge warhammers or in some cases ballista. Some regional forces also boast special war mounts, such as elephants or rhinos.   Background   The forerunner of the modern iteration of the Imperial Banner were the warrior zealots that first followed Emperor Juranius Castomir on his early crusades of conquests and conversion. With time, and the adoption of new training and techniques, they moved away from their fanatical origins and developed proper military structure.    Overview   A single banner legion is composed of 5000 legionnaires. Each legion contains 4 cohorts of 1000 heavy infantry, which in battle is led by the 1st Cohort, considered the "senior" cohort, as it is always composed of the legion's most experienced veterans. The cohorts are then further divided into 10 centuries of 100, with 2 companies of 50 in each century, and finally 5 lines of 10 legionnaires in every century, which is illustrated as follows:

The formations of the cavalry can change as needed, but will often take a similar shape, with centuries, companies and lines. Specialists can vary wildly, such as in the case of Bombarders, which due to their unusual nature might be too difficulty to organise into separate units, and so they are instead lumped together as a single "company", regardless of size, or Praepostors, of which there might only be 4 or 5 across the whole legion.   Although a Praefect would technically fall under the command of a General in the Legion's structure, it is generally understood that they exist outside the rank-and-file of the Banner. If requested, they are put at a General's disposal during battle, providing magical support to the soldiers, but every smart Banner General knows not to rely on Praefects to follow chain of command.    Ranks   The highest possible rank to achieve in the Banner is Imperial Commander, although such a title is only bestowed in wartime, as such an individual would be charged with overseeing an entire campaign. During battle, an Imperial Commander might lay out his preferred chain of command, selecting his second and third from the most senior legion generals, but otherwise the emphasis is placed on a decentralized structure, with individual legions all operating towards the same goals but with freedom to choose how they achieve those goals.
