King Rordin

Rordin Bergfoulk, self-titled "The True", known by his people as "The False", "The Robber-King" and "The Puppet", is the current King of Ordayn. It is widely known that his power is derived entirely from the Midaevian Empire; were he to ever lose their support, his nobles would tear him from the throne and throw him into the sea.   Background   Born the youngest son of the Earl of Halvenghast, the brother of Queen Theoda, Rordin was quickly taught never to expect much from life. With three elder brothers ahead of him, he had next to no hope to inheriting land or title. It was generally understood that he would become a priest and serve Storhim or move to Skaldenburg and study to become a wizard. But the priests considered his faith lacking, and the wizards of the Society of Magic quickly dismissed him as possessing no potential. With both avenues closed to him, he was left with no choice but to return home, a failure. His father, a harsh, unforgiving man, lost all interest in his youngest son, and dismissed him from his hall, ordering him to serve the family steward.   For years he was little more than a servant, tending to the elderly steward, making his meals, cleaning his clothes, even emptying his chamber pot. And with every day, his envy and his hatred grew, directed towards his father, his brothers, his people...anyone and everyone he believed had been dealt a better hand in life.   When the third war of the Northern Conquests broke out, the Earl of Halvenghast was one of the first of Ordayn's nobles to assemble his housecarls and ride out to meet the Midaevians, leaving the steward in charge of his hall and village. On the day of their departure, Rordin stood on the battlements, where he watched, waiting until the Halvenghast warriors disappeared over the horizon. As soon as the last of the housecarls was out of sight, he flew into action.   Three months before the start of the war, he had made the acquaintance of one of the Ministry of Enlightenment's countless spies, who had promised to reward him in exchange for his loyalty. Assuming they meant to give him control over his father's lands in the event of their victory, he willingly gave the Emperor his oath.   Once the battle started to turn against the Ordaynians, the Imperial spies set their plans into motion. Word was passed to Rordin of their victory via a Praepostor's Sending spell, and he took action, using thugs paid for with Imperial coin to kill the few remaining guards and seize control of the city. When survivors from the battle, bleeding and broken, made their way back, they found the gates sealed shut. The Earl, grievously wounded, presented himself before the battlements, commanding that the gates be opened. Rordin appeared, offering his father naught but a smile, before bidding him farewell as the Empire's cavalry appeared in the distance.   Once all the warriors were dead, Rordin was only too happy to open the gates to the legion's soldiers. Ordering his household servants into the courtyard of his father's hall, he welcomed the Imperial Commander, General Faurost, and publicly swore an oath of loyalty to the Empire. However, instead of being left to govern Halvenghast, Rordin was ordered to accompany the Imperial army north, to Skaldenburg. On the way, General Faurost explained the Empire's plans for Rordin; as the Earl's only remaining son (his brothers having died in the battle) and with the imminent destruction of the royal family, Rordin was about to become next in line to the throne.   Though their army had been shattered, many of the Ordaynians nobles were still ready to fight to keep Rordin from taking the throne, even after the Empire had seemingly wiped out every possible successor. Under instruction from General Faurost, Rordin commanded the 12th Banner Legion to go to the estates of all those lords who still defied him and have them executed for treason. Thus it was, in his first ac as King, he presided over the Rape of Ordayn, a period of destruction, pillaging and wholesale slaughter that lasted all the way through winter and well into spring.   Since then he has ruled as Ordayn's king, living a life of excess and indulgence paid for by the extortionate taxes he lays upon his people, a life he truly believes he is due after having been reviled for so long. With his own lineage now secure thanks to his marriage to his beautiful Sudyrian queen, another of the Empire's "gifts" for his loyalty, the only thing standing in the way of the Bergfoulk dynasty are the persistent rumours that Princess Sieghild, granddaughter of Queen Theoda, did in fact survive the Empire's purge, and has been hidden away somewhere safe by the Northern Resistance. Her capture has become his only concern, to the point where he has offered a lordship to whoever brings him her head.
