Humans

"Some dismiss humanity as being weak, or being inferior. Yet we remain where others have left, and we endure where others have fallen. With the Gods or without them, humanity will persevere. Our fate is not sealed, and our destiny yet to be written." -- High King Talgan Rhyliss

Overview

Humanity is seen as the youngest of races to rise to prominence in Erisdaire, and are by far the most resilient. While they lack the strength of giants, the wisdom of elves, or the hardiness of dwarves, humanity has endured and thrived where other races have declined. Where elves, dwarves, and others have been given great gifts by the gods, humanity has never had quite the same assistance and yet has risen to take center stage in the latest era. For this reason, they sometimes say they are chosen of the gods and destined to rule; the truth is they are merely unwilling to submit to fate, and more than willing to defy what others would force on them.

Having organized in cities and nations, humans have played to their strengths of adaptability and resilience of spirit by bringing other races together to support the cities and nations they have built. They have learned from the other races many talents which are admittedly inferior. They have learned arcane arts from elves and dragons, they have sought out the secrets of forging metal from dwarves and gnomes, they sought out halflings for advice on how to grow crops and read the seasons, they listened to the wise of the kindred races to learn the nature of the worlds beyond what can be seen, and together they wove it into their culture to strengthen themselves. It is in the nature of humanity these imperfect pieces come together to form a whole which is stronger than the sum of their parts. "One link in a chain itself may be weak, but woven together they are significantly harder to break."

Homeland

Almost every land on Erisdaire has a sizable population of humans, and they tend to be willing to settle anywhere they can. There are truly few places they simply do not live, and they will be quick to tell you it is by choice and not inability.

Favored Deities

A human tends towards any deity which matches their outlook on the world, and does not necessarily care where they are from so long as they can align to the same purpose. Notably, of all the races of the world, humans are the most prone to claiming they follow no single deity, admitting others exist but offering veneration to none. This has grown increasingly over time, as humanity does not often have as close a connection to any particular deity as much as other races do.

It is worth noting the rise of the Rhyliss Empire has pulled with it a pantheon of ten deities which are what humanity sees as the aspects of civilization and the world as they see it. Similarly it is worth noting none of those deities are new, but they have had their aspects changed slightly with the reinvention of their religions by the interpretations of the Rhyliss citizens.
