Seekers

The Protectors of the Knowledge of Eridania

Seekers are special employees working for The Great Library of Adris Eleos. Their main task is to travel all over the planet looking for rare books, maps and other sources of knowledge to be added to the library's collection. As highly trained sorcerers and knowledge bearers, they are sometimes called upon to perform special missions for The Elder Council of the Eridanian Nations, such as seeking out and protecting powerful artifacts, for example.

Career

Qualifications

Future Seekers must be prepared to live a life constantly troubled by dangers and constant travels, for the quest for knowledge may prove more difficult than it seems.   They must be wise, intelligent, and strong-minded people, for many will be the puzzles and mental challenges that will have to be solved. They should also be open-minded to other cultures and versed in the history and arts of other peoples, for they will have to constantly deal with cultures different from those they know.   They should be expert wizards and also know how to make use of various weapons, but they must also know how to solve situations in ways other than fighting. They must be diplomats, and know how to deal with kings, nobles, soldiers, sorcerers, crime lords, thieves, pirates and even monsters.   But most of all, Seekers must be lovers and defenders of literature and knowledge used for good, because it is up to them to preserve the history and wisdom of the world.

Payment & Reimbursement

Seekers are remunerated in gold by the Council in a significant amount, although the exact value is never revealed. They are free to own property, and also have their own dormitory in the Great Library. When they are sent on missions, they receive a letter of credit in the name of the Library or even the Council itself, to cover their expenses (which should not, however, be exorbitant) during the same. The Library also provides most of the materials needed for missions, such as potions, uniforms, and even weapons, though Seekers prefer to purchase a weapon of their choice.

Other Benefits

Another benefit of being a seeker, besides the payment, is the access that these have to practically all the collection of the Great Library, including parts of the reserved session, without needing permission from the Council. Seekers are also figures who attract a certain fame, especially from students of the Academy, since many wish to become like them.

Perception

Purpose

The purpose of the Seekers is mainly to gather, to buy and / or to look for books, common and rare, in all Eridania, but its services are not limited to that.   They can work within the Library, such as conducting research on books that may be of interest or working as guards for the Archive and the Library itself;   They may be called upon to perform special or secret missions designated by the Council, because of their extensive skills and knowledge. These missions may include spy or watch missions and missions to guard or search for artifacts;   They can be hired by nobles or influential people who wish to acquire a particular book or artifact (so long as it is not forbidden by the Council) or simply to organize the personal collections of these individuals.   Finally, and perhaps the most important task they can carry out, is to act as intermediaries, emissaries or diplomats on behalf of the Library or the Council itself, in order to send messages or broker peace or trade treaties because of their extensive knowledge in politics and laws.

Social Status

As a society that values knowledge and books very much, the people of Eridania consider the Seekers as true heroes, perpetuating some of the most famous of them in stories and songs.

History

The profession was born after the expansion of the Great Library and the foundation of the Royal Academy. It was realized that the High Scribe would no longer be able to take care of the Library and the Archives alone, especially with the increase in the production of written knowledge after the Academy expanded the methods of education.   Then the High Scribe recruited the young sorcerer who in the stories became known as the First Seeker or the Paper Sword, a legendary adventurer whose name is not remembered, though his fame and adventures (real or invented) have crossed the centuries and populate the minds of young people who aspire to become seekers.   The Seekers were very important for the perpetuation of Eridanian history and customs, having saved important books (and often people too) from the attacks of the League, as in the fire of the first Royal Academy, where it was possible to save much of the institution's collection, as well as many of its students, due to the presence of seekers there that terrible night.

Operations

Tools

As a traveling adventurer, the seeker needs to possess all sorts of apparatus necessary for long journeys, such as basic materials for survival (water, food, etc.), but also has some interesting additions as he is also a sorcerer and a warrior. Here are some of them:
  • Expanded bottom pouch, an enchanted pouch so you can carry more objects inside;
  • Support stick for long walks, which may also have a hidden blade or be a magic staff;
  • Several potions, both for healing and for setting up traps for eventual opponents;
  • The weapon of choice, can be a sword, war ax, spear, bow, etc;
  • A hooded travel cape, which can be charmed with invisibility or not;
  • A belt with pockets, where he can store coins, small objects, or attach the sword;
  • A magic lantern, to light the way;
  • The uniform, which usually consists of travel clothes adapted to the environment where the seeker goes, protected with hardened leather or some lighter metal;
  • And finally, a horse or other mount, rented by him in the kingdom where the mission will be carried out or provided by the Council stables.

Dangers & Hazards

Being a seeker is not easy or safe. Books and artifacts are not just in libraries and stores. Sometimes they fall into the hands of criminal or pirate organizations, or are so valuable to those who wrote them that they end up being hidden in places protected by traps and even by monsters. It is up to the seeker to be able to overcome these obstacles and bring the material safe and sound, and some have lost their lives in trying to accomplish this task.
