Draconic Language in Ereza | World Anvil

Draconic

Draconic is the language of Dragons. As dragons communicate telepathically, Draconic has never been a spoken language, but it is written and can be signed.   The alphabet is sharp and angular as it was originally made to be carved out by dragon claws. It is a combination of letters and characters; most words have an individual character that can be written or signed. Use of the alphabet is mostly reesrved for the proper names of people and places.

History of Use

The language has been through a lot in recent times; Draconic was considered a dead language in 050, a mythological language by 200, and in 314 was once again active and in use in the world.

Past Use

Dragons do not need language to communicate, but they kept extensive chronicles of their history, stories, and culture. There are sacred caverns beneath the caved hills just northwest of the Nemeli capital of Ballycay where histories were carved before dragons began writing with Water Magic.

Dead Language or Mythology

That was before the dragons disappeared. Driven from their home, Nemel, by a grief-stricken Sovereign in 020, they were scattered and hunted. By 050 they were gone, and over the decades that followed dragons slid from memory to myth.

Renaissance

In 314 the remaining dragons were released from their long imprisonment by a cell of the Life Blood Ministries. The language was revived along with its users; although sadly, the majority of the original paper documents were desiccated, the Great Library in the Free City of Bernice was able to replace much.
