Basyoon is a settled oasis in the
Taris Desert. The desert is a hard and unforgiving place, the kind of place no one will follow you if you need to get away. Only the
Tarin and the desperate are willing to face its scorching sun and sands. For the latter, Basyoon is the destination.
Settlement Layout
The Basyoon oasis, as well as the one supporting
Abydos, are linked to the same aquifer deep beneath the desert and once helped to feed the now extinct
Yooma River. However, once the waters of the Yooma stilled, something stirred- rumors of creatures rising from the deep. The denizens of Basyoon have no interest in irrigation or farming, but they do need to keep the desert from swallowing up the life sustaining water. A superstitious group, the town was built in a ring around the water with the backs of the buildings facing the water, creating a wall. There are only two public access gates that are locked tight every evening.
A trader once brought a crocodile from the
Spira River to Basyoon and left it in the water. They say the next morning it was gone.
Commerce
There are few homes built in Basyoon; it isn't the sort of place where most people would want to settle down. A majority of the best real estate is given over to establishments meant to help people forget what they are running from, such as Taverns, Brothels, Gambling Saloons, Drug Dens, and the like.
One of the most lucrative trades is narcotics. The drug dens are known as "Sun Rooms" owing to the locally made hallucinogen, colloquially referred to as Sunshine, made from the venom of the
Suneater Scorpion.
