Astryn

Humans Reshaped by Starlight

The Astryn are humans reshaped by exposure to the celestial forces that hold the Void beyond the stars. In Erenel, the moon and stars form a barrier against the darkness that presses against reality, and those who survive too close an encounter with that cosmic pressure can emerge transformed. Their most striking feature is the presence of six arms arranged in three pairs along the torso, a form scholars believe reflects the geometry of the heavens.

The Astryn are humans transformed by cosmic forces that protect Erenel from the Black Sea of Void. In the night sky, the moon and countless stars shine not only as lights in the darkness but as a barrier that keeps otherworldly organisms at bay, waiting just beyond reach. When a human gets too close to the edge where this celestial defense meets the Void, the body sometimes survives the encounter but does not remain the same. The result is the Astryn, a human reshaped by the same forces that safeguard the world.   Their transformation manifests most visibly in the growth of six arms arranged in three pairs along the torso. Astryn scholars believe this form reflects the celestial patterns that hold the heavens together, a living echo of the geometric forces that stabilize reality against the encroaching dark. Some Astryn are born into rare bloodlines that carry this transformation, while others become Astryn after surviving starfalls, lunar convergences, or moments when the sky’s protective veil weakens.

What Can Cause A Transformation

Astryn transformations occur when a Human survives intense exposure to the celestial forces that hold the Void beyond the stars.

Cosmic Breaches
In places where the Void presses dangerously close to the world, the heavens struggle to maintain their barrier. Those who survive near these breaches may emerge transformed, their bodies bearing the mark of the celestial forces that resisted the darkness.

Forbidden Rituals
Some misguided spell casters have attempted to harness the power of the heavens through dangerous rituals tied to star and moon alignments. When such rites go wrong, the surviving participant could find themselves permanently changed, their bodies reshaped into the Astryn form by the cosmic forces they sought to command.

Lunar Convergences
During rare alignments of the moon and stars, the silver light of the night sky grows unusually strong across hyper focused points of Erenel. Those caught within the silver light convergence sometimes endure a surge of celestial pressure that alters their bodies.

Starfalls
When fragments fall from the heavens, the impact site can become saturated with unstable cosmic energy. Those who survive close exposure to these starfalls may awaken days or weeks later with their bodies slowly reshaping into the six-armed form of an Astryn.

"The stars strain against the encroaching void and sometimes mortals stand too close to the struggle. When they survive, they carry the shape of that pressure with them."
— Luniwyn, the Silver Maiden

Luniwyn and the Astryn

Luniwyn, the Silver Maiden is the goddess of the Moon, Prophecy, Secrets, and Wisdom. She is one of three deities born of Aymara the Foremother, and a direct descendant of Al'Madoon, the Architect who created the world. After the Great Sacrifice shattered the physical forms of many divine beings, Luniwyn ascended to the Above and turned her attention to the night sky. From there, she watches over the silver light that joins the stars in defending Erenel from the nothingness beyond. Unlike her siblings, Luniwyn has never shown the same affection for the people of the world, but she remains deeply committed to protecting the Realms of Remembrance that her father helped create.

Because of this connection to the heavens, the Astryn naturally fall within Luniwyn’s quiet attention. She does not claim them as her chosen people, nor does she openly bless them. To the Silver Maiden, their existence is merely a consequence of standing too close to the celestial forces she guards.   Among the clergy of the Illuminated Church, which serves Luniwyn alongside her kin, Asanna and Rezmir, Astryn are treated with a mixture of respect and curiosity. Some priests believe the Astryn possess a heightened awareness of celestial patterns and subtle changes in the balance between light and void. Others see them as reminders that the struggle beyond is fragile and ongoing.   Among the Astryn themselves, opinions of Luniwyn vary widely. Some revere her as the silent watcher of the night sky and believe their transformation is tied to her eternal vigil against the Void. These Astryn often devote themselves to studying the heavens, hoping to better understand the celestial forces that reshaped them. Others feel a quiet distance from the Silver Maiden, noting that she has never claimed them nor offered direct guidance. To these Astryn, Luniwyn is less a patron and more a witness, a distant goddess whose silver gaze watches their existence without explanation.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Astryn retain the overall appearance of humans but are unmistakably altered by the celestial forces that shaped them. The most defining feature of an Astryn is the presence of six arms arranged in three pairs along the torso. The upper pair functions much like normal human arms, while the two lower pairs are often slightly thinner and longer. Though all six arms are capable of movement and coordination, the lower limbs are usually used for finer manipulation, ritual gestures, or assisting with tools and equipment.   Their bodies often carry subtle marks of their transformation. Skin may show faint patterns resembling constellations or pale lines that resemble fractures of light beneath the surface. Their eyes often reflect light in unusual ways, appearing silver, pale blue, or speckled with faint points resembling distant stars.

Astryn and the Void

Because the Astryn are shaped by the same celestial forces that resist the Void, many of them develop an unusual awareness of disturbances along that cosmic boundary. Astryn often describe an unease when the balance between light and darkness begins to shift. This sensation is difficult to explain to others, but is taken seriously as a possible sign that the heavens are straining.   This connection places known Astryn in a dangerous position. Cults devoted to the Void sometimes seek them out, believing their altered bodies hold important secrets. Some cultists attempt to capture Astryn for experimentation, while others see them as a dangerous alarm system against the cosmic struggle they hope to undo.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Astryn rarely abandon the names they carried before their transformation. Those who become Astryn later in life typically keep their original human name, seeing it as the last piece of their former identity that remains unchanged. To many Astryn, that name represents the life they lived before the heavens reshaped them, and abandoning it would feel like severing the final thread connecting them to who they once were.   Astryn who are born rather than transformed follow a similar pattern. Their families usually draw from the naming traditions of the human cultures surrounding them, resulting in names that vary widely depending on region.   Among Astryn scholars and religious orders, it is also common for individuals to adopt an additional title tied to celestial study or transformation. These titles are not replacements for their given names but are used to mark their place within Astryn society. Names such as Starwatcher, Skyborne, Lunar Witness, or Bearer of the Third Horizon may be used in formal gatherings or scholarly circles.

Lifespan

Astryn mature at about the same rate as humans and often keep many of the cultural traditions from their human ancestry. Most Astryn live between 110 and 120 years, though those born into longstanding Astryn bloodlines sometimes live a bit longer. Scholars speculate that prolonged exposure to celestial energy strengthens their bodies in subtle ways, allowing some Astryn to reach 130 years or more. Astryn who undergo transformation later in life do not seem to gain extra longevity from the change. Instead, the transformation appears to stabilize the body rather than extend its life.

Umbral Astryn

Not every Astryn emerges from their transformation balanced between starlight and darkness. Some stand too close to the boundary where the heavens strain against the Void, and the celestial forces that reshape them fail to stabilize their bodies completely. When this imbalance occurs, the result is an Astryn whose form has been touched too deeply by the Black Sea of Void. These individuals are known among scholars as Umbral Astryn, though common folk often call them Voidmarked or Starfallen.   The physical changes of an Umbral Astryn can be unsettling to behold. Their six-armed form remains, but their presence often seems to absorb light rather than reflect it. Skin may appear pale as ash or darkened like soot, and their eyes can reflect little or no light at all. The lower pairs of arms sometimes grow longer or thinner than normal, moving like wispy smoke. Many wear layered robes or cloaks, partly out of tradition and partly to conceal the unsettling proportions their bodies may have taken.   Communities treat Umbral Astryn with caution rather than outright hostility. These individuals are not automatically violent or corrupted, but their presence can disrupt celestial rituals meant to maintain balance between the heavens and the Void. Temples devoted to studying the stars often forbid Umbral Astryn from participating in sacred rites, fearing their altered nature could weaken the delicate patterns that hold back the darkness.   Among the followers of Luniwyn, the Silver Maiden, Umbral Astryn are viewed as warnings rather than enemies. Their existence is taken as evidence that the cosmic struggle above Erenel is fragile and ongoing. To study them is to understand where the defenses of the heavens may be weakening, and where the Void might someday press harder against the stars.

Astryn Adventurers

Astryn adventurers leave their sanctuaries to experience the world beneath the sky they study so carefully. The movements of the stars influence the world subtly, and Astryn believe these patterns can only be understood by traveling through the lands they affect. Adventuring allows Astryn to witness celestial omens unfold across distant regions of Erenel.   Some Astryn become adventurers after transforming later in life. The sudden appearance of their six-armed form often leaves them searching for answers that their former homes cannot provide. These individuals travel widely in hopes of discovering others like themselves, understanding the meaning behind the celestial event that changed them, or proving that their transformation has a purpose. Astryn adventurers walk the world with the quiet awareness that the heavens above are never truly still.

Astryn Phenomena

Astryn bodies were reshaped by the cosmic forces that hold the Void beyond the stars. As a result, many Astryn display strange and subtle phenomena that others find difficult to explain. When creating an Astryn character, you may choose one of the following traits or roll a d8 on the table below.

d8 Phenomena
1 On cold nights your breath glimmers faintly with silver motes that resemble drifting starlight.
2 In complete silence you occasionally hear faint murmurs that resemble distant wind or static.
3 When you stand beneath a night sky, you feel a subtle pressure as if the heavens themselves rest upon your shoulders.
4 When the moon is full or the night sky is unusually clear, your pupils narrow to sharp points like slivers of shadow against starlight.
5 Fine dust, ash, or falling snow occasionally circles you for a moment before settling to the ground, as though caught in a faint and unseen orbit.
6 Animals react strangely to you. Some become calm and submissive, while others refuse to approach as if sensing something unnatural.
7 Your shadow sometimes moves a moment slower than your body when seen in dim light. Careful observers may notice it lag behind before correcting itself.
8 When you speak in complete darkness, your voice sometimes carries a faint second tone that sounds slightly delayed, as if something in the dark repeated your words a heartbeat later.
