The Battle of Blue Blood

Military action

897 YD

A significant battle between the Duchy of Elsir during the Wyrthanhaal Civil War. The Battle of Blue Blood resulted in the death of most of Elsir's nobility and all of Duke Damien's heirs. Following the Battle of Blue Blood the Duchy of Elsir dissolved into the independent city states of Brindol and Dennovar. The Duchy of Nulnyn used the rumours of this victory to minimize further conflicts in the civil war.

During the Wyrthanhaal Civil War the Duke of the Duchy of Elsir attempted to assert his dubious claim to the the throne of Wyrth. He gathered one of the largest modern armies and marched across the Golden Plains to invade Nulnyn. His hope was that a swift conquest against Nulnyn would leave him in control of the salt mines and of the entire passage west with which he could cow the other Dukes into submission.   Duke Frendiwald, Duke Evernys' father had ample time to prepare for the coming conflict and so had sent out the forces of Nulnyn out into the Golden Plains, each group he sent was accompanied by a ranger who's sole purpose was to hide their presence from the myriad threats of the plains. These groups built huge ditches filled with spikes throughout the plains, easily hidden in the massive Savannah's. Frendivald had his preparations done well before the armies of Elsir marched from Dennovar.   Frendivald marched from Newtown the moment the Elsir army marched, knowing he would arrive at the ditches shortly before the armies of Elsir and well in view of their scouts. Accordingly the scouts would report that no fortifications had been prepared to defend the greatly inferior army of Nulnyn. Presenting himself at the front of his formations Frendivald goaded Duke Damien into charging in along with all of his full grown sons. Duke Damien and all his heirs died, impaled upon ditches before even reaching the enemy, along with the bulk of Elsir's nobility.   The following battle was brief and most of the remaining army of Elsir emerged intact after their lines buckled following the death of their leadership. Famously Frendivald lost only five men in the battle. Following the Death of Duke Damien, Earl Jarmaath of Brindol was one of the few remaining lords on the battlefield heading the troops of Brindol. Jarmaath attempted to rally the armies of Elsir but the rout was now in full force. While Jarmaath managed to lead his own army out safely, nearly half the troops led into the Golden Plains were slain by the creatures of the plain following their flight from battle.

Aftermath

Following the battle of Brindol the Duchy of Elsir was disbanded. Dennovar had lost almost all it's able bodied nobility in a single battle and the mercantile companies that controlled the much of the city asserted their power and took control, claiming the nobility of Dennovar for their own and declared independence. Brindol, under the command of Lord Jarmaath also seceded from the Kingdom of Wyrthanhaal. Both Dennovar and Brindol made their secession conditional upon the return of the a king to Wyrthanhaal, this measure protected them from potential retaliation and put the onus on the other Dukes of Wyrthanhaal to claim the crown of Wyrthanhaal to acquire the city states' fealty.
