Session 40: Talk With A Dead Man

Fjarldt obviously declined the Earl’s offer. I can’t imagine anything more boring than being stuck in one place and having to take care of other peoples’ problems. Everyone was pretending as if that title was some great honour, but I just don’t see how anyone would want to accept that job.   We talked a little bit with Oriel, who is a captain of the Sworn Sons. I guess that makes her a Sworn Daughter? She seemed alright, but she had a bit of a snooty attitude that I didn’t like.   Finally we set off on our way back to Catun. Astrelh had the gall to lend Nightmare to the outlaws without asking me first. He was lucky that I got her back in one piece. The journey to Catun was uneventful and once we arrived we headed straight to Astrelh’s temple. He had kept one of the corpses of the creatures we had fought in Blackrock and wanted to try a spell on it. The lady running the temple wasn’t happy about it, she said she had heard of creatures like this before, but not ones that were able to speak. In the end she let us do it in the temple though.   To prepare the spell we had to rest, so Astrelh and I were locked in a room with the corpse until the next morning. Sometime during the night, I woke up to find Astrelh fighting with the corpse. This confirmed our suspicion that these things can come back to life. Between the two of us, it wasn’t too hard to kill it again. Still creepy though. The next morning Astrelh cast his spell and was able to speak to the creature. For the first time, it seemed to express emotion - gasping for air and looking confused and scared. It said it was created and controlled by the Leviathan… He of the Deep… Kurtulmak… apparently this thing has many names. It didn’t remember how it was killed, but said that it was from Petvia… a long way from home. As his final question, Astrelh asked what being undead felt like. The creature replied that it felt absolutely terrifying…
