Session 29: Blood From A Stone

Today was a bad day.   I keep trying to remind myself that what we are doing will eventually be good; that we have already saved people, and that we are poised to save more. Whatever the three clawed eye are doing, it needs to be stopped – and we may be one of the few who are positioned to stop it.   But today was a bad day.   We negotiated with Lady Blackwood – I do not trust her, but I do trust her greed, and she has Wilcock. We were given three tasks, and then we would be able to talk to that craven man.   Before we settled one of those charges, we were able to help out a local alchemist, Sybil, with some 'spiders'. These turned out to be the work of fungi that manifested fears; I saw Breyraa, wounded. Bleeding.   I miss her. I miss home. It is so frustrating to be so close to Kaerndal, and yet so far away at the same time.   I wonder how my mother's doing. What she would think of me now.   We headed to the warehouse – I will spare myself the details. Stone, the man who we had been sent to murder, ran. I gave chase; I do not feel good about leaving my friends to fight, but they are capable, and I trust them with my life.   And it paid off.   “Paid off” - like taking a man's life was some gamble I made. Although I have killed in defence before, this is the first time I was the aggressor. Sometimes, that is what a warrior must do. Sometimes, a warrior has to be the monster, charging someone down, snuffing out a life.   I will remember the feeling of Stone's neck cracking under my hands for the rest of my days.   I accept that responsibility. He was not a good man, I tell myself. We were killing bad people for bad people. But I still did it.   Today was a bad day.
