Maya Arisa Matsumoto (a.k.a. Cal)
Calamity is a young adult half-elf] that happens to be a hunter who, along with her childhood friend Catastrophe, is in the VANGUARD.
Cal can be described as super quiet and extremely shy to most people. She’s one of the most polite people you’ll ever encounter, using suffixes and honorifics to refer to people and always trying to be patience and kind. Cal is also known for expressing ger love to her loved ones and friends by cooking them bento boxes full of food that are their favorites. Her giving nature and politeness is something from her humble father Valenn, and growing up in Kangsu for a while. She stands out in the friend group as not only being the shortest, but most meek. Meanwhile, her older sister Briar is the far opposite, inheriting their mother's personality.
When she’s not hunting down Daevahs and making sure to protect the people of Terrandt from their terror, she’s usually drawing - preferring to accept freelance commissions to keep her occupied. Typically Calamity will hang out with her childhood best friend Hearken. They're always at each other's hips essentially, and one will always be with the other. They're also girlfriends, in a polyamory with Zioda.
The most negative part about Calamity is her unfortunate curse; she has a symbiote living in her blood, called Breaker. They cause vampirism in Calamity, forcing her to take blood every once in a while or she fals deeper into her curse
Physical Description
Body Features
Calamity's inability to put down sweets resulted in her body being very chubby - her thighs, arms and overall stature is very thick, and similar in build to her grandmother, but Cal is instead shorter. She doesn't complain about her larger size from eating sweets, though she does get self conscious over how large her backside is from all of the bullying.
Some important traits about her body:
- Due to being half-elf, Calamity's moodlet bits are her hair and her gemstone, changing colors depending on her emotions. Her gallery below has a list of emotions she commonly feels and displays.
- Has a tattoo in Kangsunese kanji meaning "beloved", on her lower back. Had it tattooed on her when she was 16 years old.
- She also has a couple of matching tattoos with Catastrophe. The first are angel wings (to counter his devil wings), and the second is a large heart tattoo on her right backside. They both got them together in celebration to being accepted as hunters-in-training.
- A heart shaped, black gem from her dark elf heritage on her sternum. She keeps it polished every day, and takes a bit of pride in it because of the obsidian-like stone quality.
- Freckles only on her face, which she shares with with a certain goddess who was said to have a lineage in Kangsu.]
Special abilities
Calamity has the natural control over lightning, which is considered a Sub Art under the Natural Art of Air. While it's debated on where she had inherited her abilities, it's safe to assume her maternal grandmother had passed down the abilities due to being a priestess under Zioda when she was Cal's age. Her skill over lightning allows for her to use it as a traveling point, by becoming the lightning herself or skating over lines of it using her grounded soles Breaker gave her. She can also make lighnting travel over areas and create hazards that can cause damage over time. She has no real weakness (perhaps earth elemental magic but it needs to be used in a specific way to block her lightning), and the only drawback is the amount of energy she can use to create her spells or use lightning to her ability.
Adding Breaker to the picture makes her even stronger, nonetheless. Breaker being a oivdseed parasite gives Cal abilities she wouldn't have dreamed of having help her fight, such as slight control over her hair, super strength, blood manipulation, and being able to consume a lot of food in a short amount of time. The biggest ability that she's gained from Breaker is the ability to form a number of swords directly from her blood, now strengthen from Breaker as well. Swords have become her mainstay weapon for that reason. Her favorite sword to use is a katanna inspired from Daichi - almost a carbon copy but personalized to her own liking. It goes by the name of Endearment, and can slice through almost any touch material without ever losing its edge. She can also coat it in lightning to add elemental damage, or even electrocute enemies or wearing down any electrical protection by overloading.
Breaker also allows for Calamity to go into what's called Nosferatu Form. Cal's senses are heightened and instead of her ninja gear, she dons a kimono that her grandmother used to where when she was grand nun. She's extremely powerful but requires much more blood in this form.
Apparel & Accessories
Calamity is extremely gothic because of both of her parents, but especially because of her grandfather Daichi. She prefers wearing a lot of black, with maybe stripes for stockings or arm sleeves. She also loves to wear lots of studs apart of her outfit, with her flower crown ponytail holder alternating between studs and black camellias. Her clothes are urban goth but there has been occasions where she wears gothic lolita when she wants to appear much more "cute". No matter what style she wears though, she loves wearing large wedge heels to finish her outfit for the day.
The main uniform for the VANGUARD that Calamity wears is her ninja suit. This was something Breaker made for her to help with stealth missions that The Duchess, Biste or other leaders may ask for Cal to go on (usually with Hearken to help out.) As revealing as it is compared to her personality, Breaker says that they made it based off of Cal's memories and thoughts of having a sleek outfit that showed off more of her body and gave her a better sense of confidence. They also love to admit she's into the superheroine sentai Blitz! Demon Hunter anime and that's one of the inspirations behind her ninja suit.

Personal history
Calamity was born in Kangsu by her two parents, Juniper and Valenn . In highschool, her mother had moved from her own birth place of Kangsu in order to study abroad for school and met her future husband where they quickly hit it off. Cal was actually born just 10 months after they got married, with the two being helplessly in love with each other and their new bundle of joy solidifying that love tenfold.
While her life was pretty chaotic in the early beginnings between her mother visiting Kangsu to see her grandparents plenty of times. At some point, Calamity met Catastrophe and his little brother Carter when the family decided to settle down somewhere on the very edge of the outskirts of Dross.
Besides the constant moving back and forth between Terrandt and Easia, her life was relatively normal until one night a daevah attack resulted in the Levahn's family father Walter being abducted. While the Levahn family was suffering with depression and anguish at losing their husband and father, the Matsumoto family had to recover from the trauma of nearly being killed. Juniper figured Calamity needed some time away and helped her move from Dross to Uijin, Kangsu by help of her parents.
Living in Kangsu was a learning experience, albeit a tough one. Cal unfortunately experienced a lot of bullying and became very self-conscious about her body and her half-dark elf features, such as her gemstone, and her rather short stature that comes from her goblin background. While she's thankful she got to bond with her mother's ethnicity, the self confidence issues and strict social aptitude had forever altered Cal's behavior which resulted in her coming back to Dross at 17 years old with a very polite disposition and what's described as "mousey" attitude - keeping her head low, and only speaking when asked.
When she discovered that Catastrophe joined VANGUARD Calamity was right behind him and enrolled in Dross High to take up apprentinceship. The culture shock was a little intense, but it was worth going through 11th grade with her childhood friend to get into training. By the time graduation came around for her, Calamity was hired on as a temp.
Since then, Cal's been a very diligent and clean hunter, taking care of daevah issues before they become bigger problems.
At some point in her career, she was cursed by a voidseed and infected with a parasitic symbiote that took on her blood. Though this was supposed to kill her, the bond was actually very compatible and resulted in her attaining voidseed properties, with the cost of it being the need for fresh blood every several hours. Even with the circumstances Cal is appreciative for the parasite voidseed as they gave her the confidence she's always wanted.
At some point, Zioda met both Cal and Hearken and became close. All three are now in a relationship together, Hearken and Zioda further giving Cal even more of a confidence boost.

Employment
Mentioned previously was Calamity being apart of VANGUARD, and becoming both a hunter and very low level police officer. The excellence Calamity provided to the organization resulted in her graduating into being a second lieutenant. She is typically paired up with the other second lieutenants, but she can also hop onto Catastrophe's missions so as long as another one of Cal's partners are apart of the mission. Even with the amount of socializing that pushes into Cal's boundaries, she still does an amazing job with making the missions go quietly and with speed.
While Delta is usually stuck handling the paperwork and inner workings, sometimes having Catastrophe helping her, Calamity deals directly with daevahs. Her skills as a teammate or immeasurable, with her work being very clean cut and straight to the point. It's common for clients to report back that Cal had no property damage or asset damage in her hunt, and she's even polite enough to stay and chat with old, lonely people who asked to hire her for the job. She's just as empathetic to people on the job as she is with her friends, and her professionalism confuses people into thinking she's a higher ranking individual. Interestingly though, she has so far declined proposals to be promoted. Perhaps it's out of her humble nature.
Mental Trauma
Calamity is very good at disguising her pain, and most people aren't aware of the problems she's gone through until she vents to them or has a heart-to-heart moment with them about them. The list is shown:
- The biggest contributor to her issues is the bullying, mistreatment and even some sexual harassment she dealt with while living in Kangsu for the period she was with her father's family. The trauma was enough to make her much less confident and much more of a push over with little to no resistace.

Contacts & Relations
Calamity is engaged to the god of thunder, Zioda, who's invited into the relationship after Calamity and Hearken become girlfriends and fiancees. Proposing to Calamity first after realizing how much in love he was with her, the two are fiancees by the start of the story. She harbors great respect for the both of them, and always tries her best to spoil them as well (even though they both do it back in far more spades than she can keep up with.)
Family Ties
- Juniper Matsumoto - Mother - a loud, abrasive Kangsunese Dark Elf who survived a Daevah attack with her husband. She loves to joke around and is described as a menace by her friends.
- Valenn Matsumoto - Father. A survivor of a Daevah attack, he is hopelessly inlove with his wife. He has a very modest, humble personality, something Calamity inherited.
- Briar Matsumoto - Calamity's older sister. She inherited their mother's attitude and adopted a very nonchalant temperament. She's very protective over her little sister.
- Daichi Matsumoto - Paternal Grandfather - An ex gang member turned reformed office worker and father. He lives in Kangsu.
- Kyoko Matsumoto - Paternal Grandmother - A retired Dark Elf priestess under the Divine Zioda - she fell in love with Daichi and had her daughter with him.
Social Aptitude
Calamity's social aptitude is extraordinary for someone her age. As mentioned above, she's extremely polite and usually refers to people with honorifics - if they are Western, by default she will refer to them with "Mr." or "Mrs./Miss.". However, if they are a close friend of hers, or are from the East such as she, she will use Kangsunese honorifics, such as -chan, -kun, and -san. For example, right from the beginning of meeting Zioda she would refer to him as "Zioda-sama". Only after when he fussed at her about that did she stop calling him that, but she continues to be polite to others.
Her etiquette with anything else is just as high of a bar as her behavior towards people, with her always making sure everybody has a plate to eat before she digs in, doing shimeru with seafood she's preparing, and letting everyone through the door first before she goes. Even though her lack of self-confidence easily shows through these moments of her being polite, it certainly adds a charisma to her character that some believe makes her to be the cutest out of the group (which only serves to fluster her really hard of course).
Mannerisms
Cal will always bow in greeting, apology or farewell to anybody, even to westerners. Like mentioned before, she has a very polite, Easian approach to her interactions that adds more charm to her character because of this.
Hobbies & Pets
Cal has many hoobies she indulges in, but her favorite is having to make seafood and eating the food. She records the entire process from preparing to eating and shares it to the online sharing video site, VidSnap. She will usually speak exclusively in Kangsunese to her viewers (with closed caption so they understand her), and will show how to properly dissect fish, clean parasites (when she's not squeamish), and being highly educational about sea life due to her life living in Kangsu. She later shares this with Zioda, sometimes bringing him onto her show to help with cutting up especially giant fish or sea creature of some kind. Her views are pretty big, to the point that she can make some extra money on the side and afford to buy luxurious items and even better quality fish to cook. It's a hobby she indulges in far more than her others, besides art.

While Calamity does not have a Kangsunese accent (as she lost that a long time ago moving back to Terrandt), she does tend to speak a lot of it. If she knows someone is able to understand her fluently, she will prefer to speak in it rather than Abilonian. She also will sometimes say it apart of her Abilonian as well, such as an exclamation, or when she's swearing.
Relationships
History
Calamity and Catastrophe became friends once Cal had moved to Sur'Dahl from Kangsu when she was very young. Even with the two having opposite personalities, Calamity loved hanging around him and even with the insane moving around she did, they wrote letters to each other and later on would text or call each other on the phone. They stayed close to one another and decided together they'd want to be hunters to avenge their parents once the opportunity arise, and their friendship only grew stronger when they had actual classes together and were able to hang out with each other.

Cal likes to call Cat "onisan" - though he isn't her brother or related to her at all, she believes him to be one in the same vein. Cat in turn will sometimes call her "gótiquita" which means "little goth" in Espasolian.
