Legio XXX: The Golden Roc

The Golden Roc is a legendary creature that exists in the lore of Lorica. The Legio uses this ancient mythical bird as it's symbol in heraldry, and it reigns as the most illustrious military unit of the history of the empire, before it's destruction in 1700.   The Legio XXX was the primary legion of Krassus Nocius Caestes, the twelfth emperor of the empire. It was used in the accession of the Luperram, the easternmost region of the empire that had been wrestled away from the wild Kobolds, Hobgoblins, Goblins, and Orcs that had previously ranged through the otherwise fertile farmlands. The Thirtieth Legion was tantamount to the success of the campaign, driving the Goblinoids from modern Jaiaro to Metelencesa River and over it's banks.   This victorious campaign season led to the further fall of Trafalgar, and the eastward expansion of the empire to it's current borders along the tributaries of the Pajafelcak River.   The XXX Legion was finally lost in the campaign season of 1700, having been baited into an advance into the mountain pass near Jaiaro, between Mt. Krysh and Mt. Kiaro where the Goblinoids made an ambush. The whole of the legion was lost, including their standard and the golden and gemmed Roc that was the Aquila of the legion, and a symbol of their prestige and their cause.   After the destruction of the Thirtieth, the number was discontinued and the legion retired from service. Training units were dispersed between the XXXI, the XXIX, and the XII Legions, as auxiliary troops since the XII and the XXIX were both dominantly cavalry units.   In 1709, the Emperor Caestes himself rode the head of Legion XXXI, striking deep into the territories of the Goblinoids on a campaign to retrieve the missing Roc of the Legio XXX, he did not succeed in finding the Roc, and was instead mortally wounded by a spear to the abdomen, and was transported on the horseback of his most trusted general and successor, Gaius Aquillas Transa, the 13th emperor of Lorica.
