The Flame of the Coast

Summary

The Flame of the Coast is a mystical and mysterious figure that is native to the southeastern coasts of The Commonwealth of Anbhor. Throughout the years it has taken many forms as onlookers and travelers have come to encounter it. In 1058, it was thought to be the lost spirit of a dancer who died too young, cloaked in flames, and determined to finish her final performance the Flame of the Coast put on a spectacle for all to see.    Recent iterations of the Flame describe it as a stalking dragon, a vengeful trickster luring souls to the waters, and a phoenix recreating the moment of its death and rebirth. Most recently, citizens of Huvora have begun to chatter about the Flame as a rider, a spectral horse with a mane of hellfire that gallops the coastline, traveling much too fast and burning much too hot to be anything short of a demon released out of the 9 hells. For what purpose, the citizens of Huvora still wonder.

Spread

Though relatively clustered within Anbhor, the legends of the Flame have spread into Spirix and are whispered even still within The Sister States. It's popularity falls off with distance harshly, but it remains a distinct and memorable figure within the pantheon of Anbhor.

Variations & Mutation

Originating as a dancing fire spirit, the Flame of the Coast quickly took the form of a young woman after the tragic disappearance of several children within the city of Huvora during a string of kidnappings between Y.E. 1042 and 1044.    In the following years, tellings and retellings from travelers passing through the Commonwealth caused local perception to shift, the collective conscious of Huvora re-imagining the Flame as a draconic entity.   Years later, after several dozen bodies of Huvora citizens turned up along the coastline of Silk Mist Glade, the entity stalking the coasts changed to that of a trickster, luring unwitting souls to the edges of the water to be drowned and carried into the afterlife.   The most recent version of the legend comes from a group of travelers who traveled west through Spirix that reported a strange and ghostlike entity moving alongside them and ahead through to the Commonwealth. A demonic steed with a mane of hellfire trekking from one side of the coast to the other. Though this is the most recent telling of the story and its spread has been limited given its infancy, it is a popular reframing of a classic myth and is growing within public perception each day.
