Engwilt

673 After Waidwen's Fall

Scope

The motivation behind building Engwilt

I want to build this world in order to explore various interesting concepts and ideas that I feel are rarely explored in fantasy.

The goal of the project

On the one hand, I hope to create a fun and engaging setting for my DnD campaigns, yet at the same time creative writing is a massive outlet for me that helps me destress.

Engwilt's Unique Selling point

While appearing to sport a number of standard fantasy tropes, most of them tie back into the entire world as well as the mysteries surrounding it. There is no such thing as "a fireball simply forms because that's the spell', but there is actually reasons behind it. These are, however, rather well hidden most of the time to create intrigue as well as permit different interpretations.

Theme

Genre

The world is high fantasy set in a sort of late renaissance period with the first vestiges of colonialism and globalisation appearing. It furthermore incorporates concepts of Agartha.

Reader Experience

The world is supposed to feel familiar in many aspects, yet holding countless unknowns. Rather than things like the true workings of magics and the stories behind the higher, supernatural powers being simply known to common people, these are mostly mysteries in the world that any player that is interested in learning more has to figure out through clues.

Reader Tone

The world is rather mixed in tone on the surface, yet with multiple dark undertones if going digging.

Recurring Themes

The three recurring themes are: Higher, seemingly unknowable powers Interconnectivity and Conspiracies Human greed and Averice

Character Agency

Character agency is supposed to be rather high: while there are some massive plans and conspiracies by certain powers, things like which nations rise and fall as well as borders can be highly influenced by player decisions.
