Every adventurer carries a story that predates their deeds, shaped by family, profession, and circumstance. In the records of the Imperial Library, these origins are categorized into Backgrounds—the paths and roles that define a character before they take up sword, spell, or trade.

Backgrounds detail not only a person’s skills, tools, and languages, but also their place in society, connections to patrons or guilds, and the habits, beliefs, and experiences that shape their decisions. From the disciplined ranks of a soldier to the wandering life of an entertainer, each background provides a framework of identity, guiding behavior, social interaction, and survival in the wider world.

While deeds and magic may bring fame or infamy, it is a character’s background that tells the world who they once were—and hints at who they might yet become.
