Material Plane
Material Plane — The Mortal World
The Material Plane (sometimes called the Prime Material Plane or simply the mortal world) is the central plane of existence in the multiverse — the realm where material life, physical reality, and ordinary existence unfold. This is the plane most familiar to adventurers, where cities, forests, oceans, and whole continents like Enderlin exist and thrive.
Overview
The Material Plane is the foundation of the multiverse, encompassing all ordinary worlds and their physical dimensions. It is a realm governed by familiar laws of physics and time: gravity, natural cycles, birth and death, and the passage of seasons unfold as expected here. Compared to extraplanar realms, magic exists alongside these natural laws, augmenting them rather than replacing them.
Nature of the Plane
The Material Plane is defined by several key traits:
- Normal laws of physics and time: Gravity operates consistently, time flows according to natural rhythms, and matter behaves in predictable ways.
- Magic coexists with reality: Arcane and divine magic overlay the physical world, allowing wizards, clerics, and other magic-users to shape reality without overturning the natural order.
- Diverse ecosystems and societies: From sprawling empires to hidden jungles, from high mountain cities to windswept plains, the Material Plane contains nearly every type of environment and mortal culture.
Because of these qualities, the Material Plane is the stage upon which the majority of heroic quests, political struggles, and mortal stories take place.
Connection to Other Planes
Although the Material Plane feels stable and “normal,” it functions as a crossroads between other planes of existence:
- Ethereal Plane: A misty border realm that overlaps the Material Plane, often used as a conduit to Elemental Planes and Inner Planes.
- Astral Plane: A vast, silvery expanse that connects the Material Plane to divine and outer planes.
- Feywild & Shadowfell: These parallel reflections — the lush, magical Feywild and the bleak, sombre Shadowfell — overlap the Material Plane and influence its seasons, emotions, and planar crossings.
These connections mean planar travel — whether by ancient rituals, powerful magic, or hidden portals — is possible in any world on the Material Plane.
Role in the Multiverse
The Material Plane is essential to the structure of the multiverse. It is often seen as the birthplace of mortal life and civilization, where the dramas of gods and cosmos intersect with the ambitions and resilience of mortals.
Unlike extraplanar realms that may be shaped by ideological forces or elemental extremes, the Material Plane is a balanced stage: it provides structure for ordinary existence while allowing extraordinary events — from dragon flights to cataclysmic prophecies — to unfold.
Enderlin and Its Place Here
Enderlin exists on the Material Plane as one of its many worlds. Like any mortal realm, Enderlin is shaped by its natural cycles, its diverse peoples and cultures, and the interplay of magic and matter. Though most of the plane feels stable and familiar, there are always hidden corridors, ancient ley lines, and otherworldly crossings waiting to be discovered by the bold — or the unwary.
