Domesticated olive trees are widespread amid the eastern and western edges of Eluziar, a vital resource to the Turkler, Imaziɣen, Quiris, Italiani and Hellenes peoples. The Azeradj is a subspecies which has adapted to desert biomes. Its generally a wild variant but there are some towns and villages which cultivate these trees. Most Azeradj Olives are interspersed throughout the Shamsi Desert and Arabiyyah. Their closest cousin is the Ahvalik Olive native to Sesli Plato and Hellas.

Azeradj grow in craggy desert highlands where it is used as a source of wood by the local Imaziɣen and Arabiyy populations. Unwary travelers may spot the tree and make the mistake of eating its fruit, radioactive to those without elemental protection. For locals, the leaves of the tree are utilized in preparing traditional medicines and as fodder for livestock. Some have even utilized Material Magic and True Magic to better survive the most dangerous regions of the dunes. The most popular is an olive oil which can be spread on the skin to resist radiant damage, harsh sunlight and even deflect sand amid a sandstorm.

Basic Information

Anatomy

by Lee Stepp

Azeradj olive's trunk is mainly single-stemmed. Under the pressure of grazing (Azru Aoudad, Tamadla Goat and Shamsi Camels) it survives in the form of a bush and does not exceed 1.5 m (5ft) in the desert. The leaves are 2.8 to 7 cm (1-2.7 in) long and are ash green but turn white or glassy in its magic form. Some are able to emit radiant energy, glowing and giving off radiation.

Original Ancestor
Olea europaea laperrinei
Laperrine Olive Tree

Lifespan
300-600 years

Height
1.5 to 3 m

Coloration
Ash green leaves with stark white undersides. It's wood is pale white in various grains while others appear glazed with glass. When activating it's form, its leaves become white and, depending on its combination of abilities, will glow and/or transform into glass.

Genetics and Reproduction

These trees reproduce through vegetative or clonal growth. Wild azeradj rarely flowers and bears little fruit but will do so in years with good rainfall. The flowers have a diameter of 4 to 6 mm and are white. As bird populations are poor, dispersal occurs by Qafz Jerboa or Sahra Hare or by gravity over short distances. Unlike its ancestor, it's olives are pearly white and pits are often made of glass, converting back to organic matter only when they germinate. This defensive mechanism is in place to discourage herbivores from consuming the pits which can be digested otherwise.

Growth Rate & Stages

by Lee Stepp

Most of these trees are wild but they can be cultivated or hybridized with domestic variants. Olives trees are propagated by various methods. The preferred ways are cuttings and layers. The olive is also sometimes grown from seed. Germination is triggered by soaking in hot water or an alkaline solution. Local tribes know their glassy pits can be consumed after boiling them. These trees grow very slowly over many years. However, they are extremely hardy and resistant to radiant magic, sandstorms, fire and disease. It's root system is robust enough to regenerate the tree even if the above ground structure is destroyed.

Ecology and Habitats

by Lee Stepp

These trees grow in the middle of the Shamsi Desert and in Dawn Ahrayn at altitudes between 1400 to 2800 meters (4593-9186 ft), considered a symbol of Radiant Dune mountain ecosystems. They need hot weather and sunny positions without shade, preferring non-organic soils and flourishing on craggy and limestone slopes.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

by Lee Stepp

These trees are a source of wood for local populations, this timber hard and fire resistant. Its leaves are also a valued resource to feed animals and are used as a traditional medicine. There are a few remote villages within the deeper, intense depths of the Dunes who cultivate these olives. They use their wood and oil to protect themselves and freely travel amid sandstorms or intensely radiant regions by processing the oil with Material Magic.
