House Aucoin
House Aucoin was one of several major noble houses placed by the Jakonians onto the thrones and seats of power of Losana following their conquest in 464. The Aucoins led the drive for independence, while maintaining the rule of the aristocracy. They are still the most powerful house among the Losanan people with ample holdings of military levies and wealth for use in preserving their power. The branches of the Aucoins rule most of western Losana.
Public Agenda
House Aucoin stands first and foremost for the preservation and supremacy of aristocratic power in Losana. They believe firmly in the constant maintenance of the guiding hand of the upper classes over the workers and peasants of the nation. This has been accompanied by a devout adherence to the Church of the One Sun, which remains the primary faith of the house and all houses of Losana. They have expressly outlawed the practice of the old ways and have vowed to eliminate any remaining Voudounists in Losana.
Assets
House Aucoin is the only house in Losana allowed to possess a standing army. While the various nobles and other lords of the land are allowed to maintain basic militia levies with some training, the bulk of Losanan military power comes back straight to this family. The new Losanan Navy in particular has sworn direct loyalty to the king, rather than to the nation. The king is the absolute master of the armies, giving him more than enough military might to keep the power of House Aucoin intact.
The house further possesses direct access to the treasury of the nation, and taxes collected from all lesser lords ultimately end up in the vaults of the Aucoin. The money helps to preserve infrastructure and finance the army. Rarely are these coffers drawn upon for House Aucoin expenses, as the nobles possess plenty of wealth in the house stores alone.
History
The founder of House Aucoin was a Jakonian soldier from the peninsula who served with ample distinction in the Siege of Baton. Heroically capturing the walls and protecting his foothold long enough for more soldiers to arrive, this man became the founder of a new noble house with the support of the Emperor. In the years that followed, he married into a Jakonian aristocratic family that has long disappeared to history, further cementing his regime. House Aucoin was the first to turn their area of Losana into a profitable province of the empire, bringing even more wealth and acclaim over the centuries.
When the Great War brought an end to Jakonian dominance, House Aucoin was the first to see the opportunity that emerged. They managed to rally the other Losanan lords, who had various grievances against the Jakonians themselves. Although Losana had at that point been relatively untouched by the war, they led an uprising against the Jakonians and began the fight for independence. Despite promises of more equal treatment of the entire population after the war, House Aucoin turned upon the voudounists as soon as the fighting ended and Losana was free. They have maintained a consistent hostility towards the Voudounists ever since, particularly after the events of the civil war.
