Citadel of St. Ulfgar
The Citadel of St. Ulfgar started construction during the Wingo War, as the new dwarven kingdom of Valtkos Wingo sought to protect the only major river crossing of the Efcharistos River from Alsona. The castle and its fortifications were constantly grown and expanded during the conflict, as it was used as the base to launch invasions and raids across the river into Alsona itself. The citadel never fell to an attacking army, despite multiple Alsonan attempts to sabotage or overwhelm it. It continues to act as a formidable bastion to this day, a reminder of the cost of the rebellion to the Alsonans, and a vow of the vengeance that would occur if the Alsonans ever attempted to recover their western provinces.
Purpose / Function
Constructed originally with a simple wooden palisade and bunkers, it was rapidly expanded to include a stone fortress, in the quickest built citadel in the entire history of the dwarven people. The initial keep, barracks, and stone walls were completed in less than six months, much to the shock of the Alsonan army, which was astonished at the speed and determination of the dwarven engineers. This fortress held against the initial assault, and was designed primarily for housing to allow for raids and assaults into eastern Alsonan territories. Acting as a supply post rather than a bulwark the commander of the fort continued the construction even when he was technically ordered to, and by the time the elves and dwarves were driven from the east and the Alsonans ready to try and reclaim their lands, they faced a truly massive fortification in their path.
Alterations
After the war ended, the construction on the Citadel continued unabated. With ample amounts of stone blocks and carvings being dug out of Wingo Mountain, there was no shortage of cheap building materials for the workers. Every regiment and unit stationed at the citadel spent hours each day continuing to add onto the defenses. Today there exists three defensive walls, each with strong points and bunkers to continue fighting as independent entities if any one portion of the wall should fall. Each strong point has siege weaponry and chokepoints that would allow even a dozen dwarves to defend themselves effectively from an entire Alsonan regiment.
Defenses
The defenses of the Citadel of St. Ulfgar grow with each passing day, and include hundreds of siege devices of various types and shapes. The tinkering of local dwarves has lavished endless ingenuity upon these devices, with there even being more siege weapons than there are stationed soldiers inside the citadel. There are three defensive lines each capable of surviving a portion of the line's collapse, and underground passages to allow rapid reinforcement of any area where the courtyards have been overrun. The central keep is just as powerful, and stands tall over the rest of the fortress, allowing its defenders to provide fire support to any other segment of the citadel.
