Drumian Rite of Hunting Tradition / Ritual in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Drumian Rite of Hunting

Drumis is a land haunted by the remnants of the Reckoning. Beasts of both monstrous and mortal make roam the forests and hills, and even the relative safety of the Istavinion Coast can be a far cry from that of Iotura or Aitreas. In a land of survival, of kill or be killed, traditions that appear harsh to outsiders can arise. The Drumian Rite of Hunting is one of these traditions.

History

The Drumian Rite of Hunting was first used by Jarl Asgard in Waelcombe Citadel around twenty years ago. Since then, it has become the standard for death penalty executions in all Istavinion Strongholds -- though Lord Eltumal doesn't always seem to abide by it.   Depending on the stronghold, the crimes necessary for this punishment can and do vary frequently, and even change over time. But typically, anything that threatens the community or fellow Drumians is deemed worthy of the Rite.

Execution

The Rite of Hunting is an execution of justice; those who are deemed worthy of the death penalty are granted one final opportunity to be useful and to try and repay their debts to the community.   The criminal is given a simple knife and rags for clothes, before being taken within a mile or so of a nearby apex predator's den, whether it be a chalgras, a wyvern, or any other myriad of creatures. If multiple of such creatures are nearby -- which is quite common in some areas of the Istavinion Coast -- then the community will typically rotate where they bring different criminals to.   They are then forced to approach the den and fight the predator. This results in their death, a predator gaining a meal and a sense of the hunt, and -- in theory -- the community's safety for a time. To Drumian sensibilities, this is much more useful than a simple execution.
