Thile

A bucolic island located in the midst of the great Stoney River was founded by the halflings as a haven from the dangers that surround them, and has grown into an important military and mercantile hub.   Nearly all halflings in the Greenwold come from “the isle.” Built on a great island in the wide Stoney River, Thile has long served as a safe haven for the little folk. On this bucolic island of rolling hills and long river banks, halflings (and gnomes) outnumber all other races.   Isolated from the mainland by the wide banks of the river, Thile boasts the unique trait that no bridges reach it. The only way on or off the island is by boat, and nowhere in the Greenwold will you find more able boatmen than Thile. On any given day, the island is wreathed in the merrily colored sails of countless rivercraft, darting back and forth like mayflies in summer.   This reliance on rivercraft has made the halflings of Thile the most able boatmen in the realm. Favoring small, maneuverable craft, a halfling river captain is capable of sailing circles around larger ships. Their skill on the water makes these halflings highly sought after as mercenaries, and swaggering halfling sailors are a common sight in the navies of all the cities in the Greenwold. Accounts of military history are filled with tales of halfling fleets coming up the coast in the nick of time to turn the tide of battle.   Halflings who don’t pursue the mercenary lifestyle tend to become fishermen or merchants, plying the rivers near their home to support their people. Life on Thile is a peaceful one, relatively safe from the marauding creatures of the wilds, and filled with plentiful food and song. Houses and amenities on Thile are generally sized for small creatures, making a trip there unexpectedly challenging for many visitors.
