March of Lakatos

Lakatos is a march in Wrisriviara, located on the hills bordering Belcastel, and known primarily for its wool exports. Historically, the Duke of Wrisrivara often held close ties with the Marquis of the area, as the local troops are well-regarded for their pike formations. Nevertheless, following the death of the capable Marquis Jan as well as most of his heirs, the region has been plunged yet again into strife. The new Marquis, Lord Laslo, is merely seven years old, and so the estate is managed by the old lord's wife, Kíra, and his cousin, also named Jan. Kíra generally deals with foreign affairs, while Jan manages the estate.   The March has been in a strong military position as a result of its favourable terrain, although recently, many other lords have attempted to invade and pillage the duchy to loot it while it is in a weakened state - the nearby lords of House Ranota have even made multiple attempts to overthrow the young Marquis entirely to place in their own lord. This has been to little success due to the skill of the local troops. Raiders from the north have generally avoided Lakatos, as it is not as wealthy as the river counties and better defended. However, despite recent conflict, war has not always been the defining feature of the region. The local convent, for example, is one of the most significant religious institutions in the region, and stores many scientific and historical codices. Duke Vincent supposedly used some of the history books located from there in his studies, although his interest in the region has recently declined, as he focuses on other issues. The people of Lakatos are generally conservative religiously, and generally see Dedrik as more of an usurper than a rightful king. Nevertheless, the local people are far from violently political, and the common folks are generally more interested in minstrels than mercenaries. There are few major population centres in the march, but the biggest one is Surany, the town where one can find the convent and the Lakatos estate.. From here, many traders make their way to larger towns to sell wool.

Geography

The March of Lakatos features multiple grassy hills, not ideal for large crop yields, but excellent for herding sheep. As a result, wool and mutton are common in this part of the country. The woodlands are used for timber as well as hunting, although they have been depleting recently due to construction projects. The area also has many small streams, although few thick enough to cause anyone to drown. Lakatos is also one of the windier places in Wrisriviara, and thus there are a few windmills near Surany. They are the pride and joy of the local millers.
