The Burg of Brexley

Brexley is the main port of the Cullis Marshlands and thought to be one of the original settlements of the area. It sits within a simple stone wall that in this day and age would do little to keep out more than just bandits. The building however have managed to modernize with the times, due to the influx of craftsmen and traders - unlike some of the smaller towns and villages of the Empire. The town is made up of 8 major districts, Longside, Stormmile, The Green, Amberside, The Docks, Windyard, Southgate and The Shallows.

Government

The town (or Burg) is ruled by two individuals, like most major towns in the empire: one elected official in charge of Lore and a non-elected noble in charge of Order. The local elected official The Reeve is a man by the name of Wulmar Wynflead. He, Like all Reeves, is elected by the landowning people of the area from the office of constables. The Reeve is in charge of the legal proceedings of the town and the upholding of the Laws, as well as the protection of learning. They are the sole Judge and Jury of the local land. Second to the Reeve is the Sargent - in this case a man by the name of Denewulf. The Sargent is in charge of the Local Watch and the apprehension of criminals. Below the Sargent are the Constables and the Watch Commanders. Constables are in charge of collecting Taxes, Writing Reports and the administrative services of the court. Watch Commanders are in charge of the local town watch - the local police force. The other ruler is the Thagne. Thagnes are the local nobility and bannermen to the larger Nobles of the Province. Their position is affirmed by loyalty to said provincial ruler, Going against said ruler could see their land stripped from them at any time. The Thagne of Brexley is a man named Aethelwine of Linley. The job of the Thagne is that of a military commander, they are to raise and maintain a group of Knights or Housecarls at all times. In times of war the Thagne can assume direct control of the entire running of the Burg, giving them final say on all matters should they wish.In times of War, The Thagne raises a militia known as a Levy, which joins them / their commanders and is sent to join the provincial Lords army. The Levy is a form of conscription and requires all men and women not in “Vital Work” and of able body to serve in the army.

Defences

Brexley has a 22ft stone wall, picketed with bastions and towers on the gatehouses. While it does not have a Castle per say, the Fortified family home of House Linley lies within its own subsection of walls like a keep and is defensible if necessary.

Infrastructure

The Towns main infrastructure comes in the form of the Dockyard, on which the town was founded. The roads in Brexley are kept in a state of high maintenance, in order to rapidly move troops and supplies towards Castle Cullis.

History

Historically, Brexley was founded as a port to supply Castle Cullis from the Capital of Seate during the early stages of the war with the Elves. Now its a commercial stop between the capital and the outer reach of the empire. The oldest part of the town is its docks, which originally was little more than a simple rock construct jutting out to sea and a stone barracks for the men guarding it. Overtime, as the military requirements increased the flow of imports, the Dockyard expanded. With the influx of troops, naturally civilization followed. Farmers, Shopkeepers, Craftsmen and Families began to populate the area around this new established Dockyard.   In 1062, A man named Thurstan of Linley was elevated to Thagne of the area and commissioned the building of Linley Safehold - A fortified stately on the outskirts of the burgeoning village. In the year 1104 the final stones were laid in the outer wall, A production that was rushed when an Elven army reached the gates of Castle Cullis to the South and threatened to push further in land.   The walls of Brexley are only 22ft high and of flint/cobblestone construction. There are a series bastions along the wall, with only the gates having full fledged towers.

The Green

"The Green" or so it is known is a large park space today with trees, fountains and plant beds. However it has a darker history than a simple area of respite and nature within the town. In the center of the green, there once stood a large Oak tree. One day a Half-Elf by the name of Olivandris was tried but not convicted of the murder of a child or group of children. Upon returning home after many months locked in the town jailhouse. Olivandris thought the ordeal behind him. However, he was awoken by townsfolk breaking into his home. The mob, outraged by the "lack of justice" took the matter of punishing the Half-Elf in their own hands and lynched them from the mighty oak in The Green. The next day the town awoke to find the mighty oak had shed all of its leaves, scarred by the deed it had been forced to witness. It is not clear if Olivandris did kill the child/children or not, what is certain is it then became tradition in Brexley that death sentences would result in the Hanging of the criminal from the Old Oak Tree rather than the previous method of beheading. However the tree has since been surrounded by new growth, and was later cut down when the practice of hanging criminals stopped within the town.

Architecture

The architecture of the town follows the same style as a majority of the Empire, using an amalgamation of stone and wood crafts in the traditional way. Brexley does in have some unique buildings within the architecture of its various temples and businesses that do not originate from The Empire.

Geography

Brexley sits on the western shore of Black Wolf Bay and is surrounded by a patchwork of farmlands and forests. To its west, is the marshes the Cullis Marshlands are famous for.
