Viewing Glass

Viewing glass is a form of magical communication technology that allows two or more reflective surfaces to connect across long distances. When properly enchanted, these mirrors can send visual images and sound between one another, allowing people in distant locations to speak as if they were standing face-to-face.   This technology has changed long-distance communication by allowing nobles, governments, military leaders, performers, merchants, and wealthy individuals to share information far more quickly than before. Though still expensive and not yet common among ordinary citizens, viewing glass is already considered a revolutionary invention.

Utility

A viewing glass is created from two or more specially prepared mirrors. These mirrors are magically enchanted to connect to each other, either directly or through a central main mirror.   Some viewing glass systems are built with one mirror acting as the transmitter while the others act only as receivers. In this form, the receiver mirrors display whatever the transmitting mirror reflects, allowing one message or image to be shown across multiple locations.   Other systems are built so each mirror can act as both a sender and a receiver. These are used for direct communication. When activated, each mirror reflects the image and sound from the other connected mirror, allowing people on both sides to see and speak to one another.

Manufacturing

The construction of viewing glass begins with a flawless sheet of clean glass. The glass must be free of impurities, scratches, bubbles, or other flaws, as even small imperfections can interfere with the enchantment.   Once the glass has been prepared, it is coated with liquid tin. This layer allows the mirror to hold the next stage of the process.   A mixture of liquid aluminum, powdered lay line crystal, light-aligned dust, and wind -aligned dust is then poured onto the sheet of glass. This mixture transforms the prepared glass into a reflective mirror capable of holding the magical connection enchantment.   After the reflective surface is formed, a protective substance and sealer are applied to preserve the mirror and stabilize the enchanted material. The glass is then cut into the proper shape for its intended frame or housing. Two or more mirrors are usually cut and prepared in matching forms so they can be linked together properly.   Housing and Mana Circuit   The housing for a viewing glass is constructed before the mirror is set into place. Each frame contains a mana circuit designed to activate and regulate the enchanted glass.   The housing also requires lay line light and lay line wind crystals. These crystals are usually placed near the top of the casing, though their exact position may vary depending on the design. The larger the viewing glass, the larger and stronger the crystals must be.   The crystals hold the programming and connection instructions for the device. Once the mirror is placed into the housing, the mana circuit activates the leyline dust inside the mirror. This allows the viewing glass to capture the image and sound it reflects, transmit that information to the connected mirror, and receive a reflection in return.  

Limitations

  If the mana circuit or either of the two primary leyline crystals is destroyed, the viewing glass will stop functioning.   A new viewing glass can be connected to a central hub after construction, but only by someone skilled enough to match the correct magical frequency. Even a slight error in the frequency will prevent the connection from working.   This method only works with hub-based systems. A new device cannot be added later to a pair of viewing glasses designed for direct two-way communication. Mirrors used for a two-way connection must be created and calibrated at roughly the same time, with both devices enchanted specifically to connect to one another.   Viewing glass also fails during a Golden World Storm. When the world shifts into the Golden World state, the technology becomes completely inactive. The connection cannot be restored until the storm has ended and the world has returned to normal.   The size of the connected mirrors also affects the image. When two mirrors of different sizes are linked, the larger mirror can only display an image equal to the usable surface area of the smaller one. The image appears within the section measured from the position of the primary lay line crystals and follows the same proportions as the smaller mirror.   Because of this, two-way viewing glasses are usually built to the exact same dimensions. Different-sized mirrors may still function, but the image can be cropped, reduced, or distorted.   Hub systems are more flexible. Researchers have developed methods to stretch an image sent from a smaller transmitting mirror onto a larger receiving mirror. However, the receiving mirror must still be of a reasonable size, and stretching the transmission often causes the image to appear blurred or fuzzy.   The more visual and auditory information being transmitted, the greater the strain placed on the mana circuit and leyline crystals. This is especially important in two-way communication, where both mirrors are constantly sending and receiving information at the same time.

Social Impact

Viewing glass has begun to change how people communicate across long distances. Because the technology remains expensive, it is mostly used by nobles, kingdoms, governments, military leaders, and those wealthy enough to afford it.   In government and noble courts, viewing glass allows important figures to speak with one another without needing to travel. Messages that once took days or weeks to deliver can now be shared almost instantly between connected locations.   Military forces have also begun using viewing glass to relay information to troops, commanders, and armies. This has made it a valuable tool for strategy, scouting reports, and emergency communication.   The technology is also beginning to affect entertainment and performance. Some performers and arena managers use viewing glass to make distant stages, performances, or competitions easier to see from different parts of large venues. In major arenas and stadiums, viewing glass can bring faraway action closer to the audience, creating new forms of spectacle.   Although it is still a developing technology, viewing glass is quickly becoming one of the most important magical inventions of the modern age. Scholars, engineers, nobles, performers, and military minds are still experimenting with its uses, and many believe its full potential has not yet been discovered.
