Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur when the land violently shakes as immense forces beneath Elema’s surface shift and release energy. The ground trembles, structures crack, and landscapes can be reshaped in moments.
Though often destructive, earthquakes have also played a major role in forming Elema’s geography. Hills, ravines, mountains, and fractured valleys all owe their existence at least in part to tectonic upheaval. What breaks the land in one era may sculpt it for the next.
Manifestation
Earthquakes most commonly occur along tectonic fault lines that run throughout Elema. These faults constantly shift, grind, and adjust as the planet’s crust moves. When pressure builds faster than it can be released, the sudden snap or slide produces seismic shockwaves.
There are three primary causes:
- Tectonic Shift (Fault Line Quake): The most powerful and common form. When plates grind or collide along a fault line, accumulated pressure releases violently, producing widespread tremors. These quakes are responsible for mountain formation, valley splitting, and major landmass changes.
- Magma Pressure Quake: Volcanic activity can destabilize surrounding crust. As magma forces its way upward or shifts underground, it creates localized tremors. These are often precursors to eruptions, though not always.
- Lay Line Charge Explosion : During a Lay Line explosion the amount of force of energy at Lay Line regardless of elemental alignment can send shockwaves through the surrounding terrain. These quakes are usually smaller than tectonic events but can still be destructive, especially near ley intersections.
Effects
The intensity of an earthquake varies greatly. Minor tremors may barely be noticeable, while major events can tear open the ground and reshape entire regions. Potential consequences include:- Structural collapse
- Landslides
- Sinkholes
- Secondary natural disasters
- Terrain fractures and elevation changes
Localization
Earthquakes can occur anywhere in Elema, but they are most common:
- Along major fault lines
- Near volcanic regions
- Around active geyser systems
- At powerful Lay Line nodes or intersections
