Kobold Species in Eldris | World Anvil

Kobold (Co-Bold)

Commonly thought of as inferior of intelligence and build, Kobolds are a lizard like race of Faylus.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kobolds range in size, from as small as three foot fully grown to six foot. They have a humanoid appearance, standing digigrade on the balls and toes of their feet. Scales cover their body from head to toe like a lizard. Their toes end in thick sharp claws much like a dragon or dinosaur's. Their hands have four to five fingers, depending on their feral counterpart. A variety of horns and feathers have been observed in kobold anatomy, as well as various styles of tail.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kobolds reproduce sexually once every five years once reaching maturity. Females will pair off with one or several mates. After a gestation period of 3 months, the female lays between one and three eggs, with larger kobolds capable of producing up to six. Once laid, eggs incubate for another six months before hatching. Infertile eggs are discernable by being deflated, yellowish, and oddly shaped, while fertile eggs are white, plump, and oblong.

Growth Rate & Stages

Kobolds spend around the same amount of time as humans total gestating. Once hatched, they are capable of getting to their feet and walking. They practically begin life as toddlers, relying on their community to tend to them. They spend three years as nestlings and grow slowly, shedding up to four times a year as they grow, any feathers or horns growing in during this period. They reach half their adult size at ten years of age. They are considered an adult at twenty years of age or when they have their first fertile cycle. Kobolds are considered elderly at sixty years of age with a life expectancy of ninety to one hundred and ten years old.

Ecology and Habitats

Kobolds are found thriving in warmer climates where they are able to safely bromate during the cold months. Favored places are deserts, jungles, forests, and plains.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kobolds are omnivorous and scavengers. They will eat anything that doesn't kill them and some will even eat what would kill them.

Biological Cycle

Kobolds shed once or twice a year once they reach adulthood, once in early spring and once in late fall. Temperatures dropping too low will trigger the kobolds to hibernate.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Kobolds are as intelligent as other humanoid species, however, their reclusiveness and nomadic ways have left many unable to communicate well with other species, leading them to be believed that they are of lower intelligence.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Extrasensory capabilities vary depending on the the subspecies, but tremorsense and Darkvision are common traits to all Kobolds.

History

Kobolds were created during the Age of Dragons. Through sorcery and science, human and lizard DNA. After many failed attempts, stable specimens were created and began to be mass produced in vats as well as bred. However, the Dragon War fell upon them shortly after, sending many pods into stasis or gone destroyed. Living Kobolds were either freed from their creators by the Dwarves or escaped on their own.   Sheltered by Dwarves or left to fend for themselves in the broken shifting world, Kobolds found their survival through communities. Breeding between Kobolds, Humans, and Feral lizards kept bloodlines fresh, evolving the species over time.    As humans rose to be the dominant species, Kobolds began to avoid other hominids for their own survival. Most live in nomadic tribes, while others live in stationary settlements in ideal climates.
