Sobrinity

Sobrinity is the belief that separation from high technology will impede moral degradation. Members of this culture believe that high technology is a gateway to seeing oneself as above the gods, or worse, the masters of gods and magic. This is considered a sin by advocates of Sobrinity, so they have taken to living in communes far from the influences of high technology, and the societies that engage in their use. They do not feel themselves to be superior to these societies. Rather, they feel a sense of sorrow for what they see as the inevitable end that high technology will bring.
Communes are normally located near a source of fresh running water, with a clear path that allows for traders to come and go. This could be in open valleys, wooded foothills, tundras, or deserts. No matter the location, it is always within a couple days travel, or less, from more civilized locations. This is to preserve the commune's ability to engage in trade, and keep their settlements stocked with fresh foods, or goods that they otherwise cannot harvest themselves. Due to their aversion to high technology, they also refuse to allow merchants or caravans that rely on such machines into their settlements. Instead, they will meet the merchants and trade caravans outside of their settled area, and return whatever goods they've traded for in their own wagons and carts.
Members of this movement tend to get along well with elves, dwarves, orcs, and other races that rely heavily on the land for survival. They have a mutual respect for the difficulties associated with living off of the land. Often times, traveling groups may find themselves welcomed into the settlements, as long as they're willing to share stories of their time in the wilderness, or stories of their exploration of the larger world. Tales of the frozen north are particularly enjoyed by the young children of the southern settlements, since the harshness of the north is something that even seasoned explorers of the southern lands have rarely had to endure.
It is a simple life that these people live, but they do so feeling that to live simply, no matter how straining it may be, is better than to be tempted by high technology. They do not want to feel like everything can be done for them by magic or machine. They want to feel pride in their work, and have something to show for their efforts. They feel that to live any other way is not fully living. But no matter their outlook, they are always willing to offer their help, or compassion to any who ask of it.
