The Holy Kingdom of Roland (About)
The Holy Kingdom of Roland inhabits the southern half of he continent of Eos. Claiming their lineage from the First Explorers, travelers who rode the Astral Ring down from the moon to settle on the land below. Their society is broken into classes and families, with the most powerful of these being the Court of the Rose Garden, a collection of royal houses at the seat of which sits the King of Roland, Oliver von Roland.
The Kingdom of Roland had been at war with their neighbors to the north, the Confederacy of Si'vali War Tribes. While the origins of this war are debated between the two countries, the current government has adopted a policy of reconciliation, and the two countries have been at peace for the last 30 years.
Structure
The Kingdom of Roland is governed by a constitutional monarchy where the king must have the approval of the Rose Garden before he is allowed to start, or end a war, but other matters such as trade and diplomacy are goverened by the family with most sway over that sector. The von Silphis control the church, the Knottworths control infrastructure, Canvalls control the economy, Bennes controls local militias, Salis' control the Goldenvale farming sector, and Antelles control domestic trade.
The Roland family runs the navy as well as holds control of the crown, Oliver von Roland has been effective in rallying the numerous lower houses that assist the garden houses, which has allowed him to bend the garden houses to his will, but this has led to animosity from the garden houses despite their cooperation.
Public Agenda
Prior to the civil war 30 years ago, Roland society was primarily focused on settling the north under a strict religious doctrine that led to corruption of local governments and an abuse of lower classes. This changed when Oliver von Roland fought the second Roland Civil War, where he reclaimed the throne from the von Silphi family after rallying the lower houses against them.
History
The Holy Kingdom of Roland was founded in the first year of the First Era, 0 FE, although its founding city, Aristia, wasn't founded until 50 years later.
Demography and Population
Population and demographics are varied and diverse as far as ethnicity, with even Si'vali citizens emerging within the last 30 years. Social hierarchy is based on family lineage, with the clearer paths to the original First Explorers being the most affluent.
Foreign Relations
The Roland government has always had a turmultous relationship with their neighboring nations, the Si'vali Free States, and the Empire of Iroha. Where Roland and Si'val have been at war since their inception, the Si'vali people however lack the infrastructure to be of a significant threat, and the Roland have used previous aggression to justify an invasion of what they see as frontier land. This has put them at odds with the settlements of Tel'rando, Khandha, and Moku'rando, but where Moku'rando saw the nearby fort of Far Reach pop up and grow, effectively pushing them out to the outskirts of their own settlement, Khandha saw their town engulfed by a Roland garrison establishing a road to the Si'vali capitol. The Roland government brought in farming infrastructure, and turned the fishing and trading post into a poppy agriculture and refinement town complete with a provisional police force administrated by the Roland garrison. Tel'rando has been violently opposed to Roland occupation, as their regional militia, known as the Okue, have been the ones who most often faced the Roland forces in battle, acting as a Si'vali military wing. Following the end of the war, Okue remnants have been known to attack Rolandite patrols and trade caravans, often disguising themselves as bandits to avoid implicating Tel'rando directly.
For as old as the kingdom is however, the Empire of Iroha is older still. The only other nation to have come into direct contact with the Roland people, the Iroha are a nation far older, with a written and detailed history stretching back over ten thousand years. The Irohan people have been very selective in what they share with both Rolandite and Si'vali traders, and will even attack explorers who venture too far outside their home borders. The path to Iroha lies to the west, but Irohan war fleets have been seen to the east, south, and even past the uncharted Si'vali shores to the far distant north. It was in Iroha that King Oliver signed the Treaty of Three Swords with Emperor Shuwen and Iron King Narase, which ended the Thousand Year War.
