The Alliance of the Wandering Scholars

The Alliance of the Wandering Scholars is a magical and scientific organization devoted to the collection of knowledge and the use of magic to protect the world from unnatural threats. It was founded during the ninth century in the city of Baghdad, but has since branched out to include scholars in approximately 200 locations. Scholars move from location to location, dealing with magical conflicts in the area and writing reports to be shared with their colleagues. Much of the information recorded is magical, due to the nature of their work, but scholars also devote themselves to recording the culture, history, and knowledge of people and creatures in the area.

Structure

The Alliance of the Wandering Scholars is not a public organization, and generally tries to keep publicity to an absolute minimum. However, anyone who learns of the organization can apply to join, and following a year of training and evaluation, becomes a scholar responsible for work in an area. New scholars tend to stay for five to ten years in the location they trained, to establish habits and area knowledge.   Very few supervisory scholars exist. Decisions made by the organization tend to be made democratically by whoever can be reached to ask. Sometimes, these decisions are made based upon texts made by the original scholars in the organization.   Each scholar tends to have an area of specialization. Some scholars are more skilled at dealing with artifacts, while others pay attention to magical creatures and organic conflicts.

Public Agenda

The Alliance of the Wandering Scholars does not have a public agenda, per se, but does carry more private values in its charter and goals for members. The Alliance is dedicated to tolerance of ideas, documentation and analysis of information, and making the world a better place for disadvantaged people. One of the main ways they work to accomplish this is by dealing with magical threats. To the Alliance, the danger posed by loose magic and by people being granted extreme power is rarely worth the benefits of providing magic to the world. Scholars are not banned from using magic to help people, and some do, but the secrecy of magic in general helps protect the world from harm.
