Crawford Mitchell

(a.k.a. Sæwine)

Sæwine was a young smuggler who lived in South Saxony during a time of political turmoil. He was exactly as ill-tempered as it was possible for a person to be, and after a spectacular bar row, was cursed to wander the earth until he conceded that Cædwalla of West Saxony had become the rightful ruler of the area. Conceding things was never quite Sæwine's strongest skill.   Following his drowning on a salt run, Sæwine decided to take his new curse and use his immortality to turn the tides of battle. He quickly learned that one man, no matter how undying, could not protect any significant land or save enough soldiers to bring the changes he wanted. After a particularly frustrating battle, he threw in his hat and began to travel in the wilderness, keeping barely current on language changes through watching the occasional play and refusing to invest in any sort of conflict.   In the early 15th century, long after he had lost his name of Sæwine, he left the forest from extreme boredom and found himself the target of a Wandering Scholar who wanted to keep him from causing magical effects that would prompt other people to seek out immortality at a high cost to the human world. Instead of taking a life in a vault, the newly dubbed Crawford Mitchell joined the Alliance of the Wandering Scholars, ready to work at a new job where one person can actually affect change.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Crawford Mitchell is a ghost; what this has meant across his lifetime has changed. At first death, he was primarily solid and fairly easy to injure. He could take an incorporeal form, but only with great effort. Over time, he has become more primarily incorporeal, and now it is very difficult for him to become solid enough to interact with objects in the world. He has to think carefully about being solid enough that the words he tries to say can create sound waves. When he tries to change his form, plants nearby wither and most animals try to flee.

Intellectual Characteristics

Crawford Mitchell is easy to anger, impulsive, daring, and tends to avoid dealing with people he doesn't have to deal with. If he is told to do something, he will almost certainly refuse. The best way to get him to do something or to learn a new habit is to appeal to his dislike of authority. He learns skills almost entirely by doing them, and in fits and false starts.

Morality & Philosophy

Crawford looks at the world as full of massive groups of people, and believes it utterly impossible for one person to effect change without drawing a crowd in with them. He doesn't hold much regard or hatred for a king or emperor, but he has a great distrust for local law and tax enforcement. He believes in the importance of ancestral places and traditions to people, and has a special disdain for conquerors and colonizers. He isn't invested enough in changing the world to act as a Robin Hood or a revolutionary, but figures generally that people who steal from those who can afford it are his people.
