Hadley

Hadley Jean Marron

Hadley is a young scholar with a bright persistent unflappability. When a problem seems unsolvable or a creature is being unreasonable, they step aside to dance for a few minutes and come back with a refreshed sense of purpose. Hadley carries the role of xenobiologist and healer of Eindothlon, the roaming Scholarly outpost on the Northwestern Pacific Rim.   Hadley came from a warm and close family, who tended to poke fun at the supernatural but supported Hadley's studies of biology. They keep strong ties to their family especially because friendship has been hard for them to find. Ça va, ça vient. Their mother always emphasized an open mind and a cautious optimism about people, and that's how Hadley tries to approach the world; they assume no one is there to cause them harm or say something cruel, but certainly don't take unwarranted chances.   Hadley joined the Alliance of the Wandering Scholars after two years in a college biology program. They found an escaped Laestrygonian squirrel and, in capturing it for animal control, proved their wits and biological knowledge to an undercover Scholar. They were fairly quickly transferred to Eindothlon, which lacked any xenobiological support, and learned most of their knowledge from reading books and articles by other scholars on the subject.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Hadley has a neurological palsy that causes their muscles to sometimes jerk or vibrate. They are a large, imposing person, with a stomp that can be heard from quite a ways. They have a dulled sense of hearing and a sharp sense of smell.

Identifying Characteristics

Hadley has a black tattoo of a growing vine across their left hand, up their left arm to their shoulder. They also have a collection of birthmarks on their back that they call their constellations.

Apparel & Accessories

Hadley tends to wear colorful scarves and bandanas around their head. The fabric is sometimes tied like a colorful cap, sometimes like a flowing swirl of almost-hair. It's far easier, in Hadley's opinion, to deal with some animal ripping the scarf off than to have that animal pulling at her hair.

Specialized Equipment

Hadley carries biologist essentials with them wherever they go. This includes a thermos of milk, an antitoxin kit, and life jackets for the team (following a close miss with a water deity). They also carry earmuffs for use when a creature's cry is dangerous.

Mental characteristics

Education

Hadley spent two years studying biology at a university before becoming a Scholar. That, plus their Scholar training, has given them a fair knowledge of anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, toxicology, and good old wrangling.

Intellectual Characteristics

They learn best from books and other word-based mediums. Diagrams can be helpful, but it's all about the labels for Hadley. They think best in the back of their mind while doing something simple and they solve problems while dancing, counting leaves, or making soup. Their field journal is a mess of notes and checklists meant to help them work, but by the time something makes it into the notebook, Hadley knows it by heart.

Morality & Philosophy

Hadley has a persistent optimism, truly believing that the world can become a better place and that there's no limit to what can be accomplished by people working to support each other. Hadley's morality is very come-as-you-are; people and creatures are as they are, and that's not an intrinsic moral failing, but everyone and everything can act more kindly.

Social

Family Ties

Hadley is extremely close with their family. This includes their mom and pa, their little brother Eric, their Auntie Margery, their Uncle Jorge, their cousins Maria and Paul, and their grandmama. The rest of their family lives rather far away, and so while they visit when they can, it's mostly about the close relatives. Hadley spent a lot of time growing up hanging out with Auntie and cousins after school, and then coming home to a warm dish of something leftover from the back kitchen of the restaurant where their parents worked.
