The Barrier and Creation of the Well
The Gods of Eien were all but destroyed by the Alfather at the end of the First Age. Survivors rallied what energy they had and created a barrier between the greater Universe and their world; cutting off Eien’s energy and magic from the Alfather. The result would have been catastrophic but for the creation of the Well.
The Well is believed by mortals and lesser Ethereal beings to be a graveyard of sorts - but that is far from the truth. The true-gods of Eien gave everything they had to secure their world and existence, and it is their sleeping bodies that formed the basis of the Deep Magic that powers all of Eien. They trusted their first creations - the Dragons - with the Keys to the Deep Magic, ensuring the Well would never be depleted or abused. Some believe that the eldest, wisest of the Dragons are able to communicate with the sleeping Gods - though this has never been confirmed by Eienic scholars.
Later, the true-gods created the Material and Ethereal Planes, forming a chain of energy movement throughout their creation to ensure balance despite it’s isolation. Material creations live and die, transitioning to the Ethereal where they either elevate to Ethereal beings themselves or become energy for stronger beings. Ethereal beings, when they dissipate, transition back to the Well where their energy is allowed to rest and be cleansed before re-entering the Material World through Dragon Magic.
As for the true-gods - they continue to sleep, their awareness and full power sealed. Their Will sometimes comes through the strongest of their believers, manifesting as Avatars in times of turmoil when believers of the Alfather again risk the security of Eien by attempting to bring down the barrier.

The basis of the Well was in direct response to the Gods realizing that they had doomed their world if energy only flowed from one state to another in a single stream as a result of the Barrier. They carefully curated their response to balance the world's magic and ensure it travels where and as it should.
