EDEN Undone

Das Ende Aller Dinge

Scope

The motivation behind building EDEN Undone

Team INKubus is a group of queer, nerdy people working in the games industry by day, making their own TTRPGs by night. With a trusty group of like-minded friends, we attempt to build a fun story-telling game with a dark twist, diverse representation and high accessibility.

The goal of the project

Combining our life-long experience as players, writers, game smiths and storytellers to hopefully create an engaging and fun new ttrpg for everyone to enjoy.

EDEN Undone's Unique Selling point

EDEN Undone is a table top role playing game aiming to unite old school classical RPG mechanics like adventure, character progression and loot & level mechanics with more progressive story-telling-in-a-group approaches like PBTA.   We have written a unique system to support our approach and are not using an existing set of rules.   Additionally, we have created a post-apocalyptic setting with noir and queer undertones and intricate world-building, aiming to intrigue and allure the player to become a part of it and change history.

Theme

Genre

Mythical, Post-Apocalyptic Neo-Noir Euro-Punk.   All writers and team members are from Europe. The European and Eurasian continent has vast history and rich lore from so many different cultures, and we are aiming at exploring the diversity of this background to shape the world of EDEN Undone.   The game is mostly geared towards yound adults and adults, definitely tackling mature subjects like sexuality, violence, abuse, politics and war.   We suggest talking to all players about their comfort zone before playing, and additional safety protocol like the use of an X-Card can make a lot of sense.

Reader Experience

I want to answer this question with answering three fundamental questions of ttrpg game design I snitched from Avery Alder a while ago:   1. What is your game about?   Narrating Post-Apocalyptic, Neo-Noir Adventures with friends, making otherwise unattainable experiences while walking in somebody else's shoes.   2. What do the characters do?   Flawed heroes on a journey to strike a balance between two rivaling souls within them, changing the world for a price.   3. What do the players do?   The players manage their characters' mental, physical & emotional resources; attempting to strike mental balance as currency for their actions to the goal of leaving their footprint & change the world.

Reader Tone

EDEN Undone is a dark place with conflicts starting from within any character and spreading over politics and cultures. But conflicts are there to be solved.   The world in EDEN is still young, still forming. People are slowly evolving out of a tribal phase into a diaspora around the known worlds, partly due to new settlements forming and big nations starting to claim land and make rules not everybody can agree upon.   Players should be ready to embrace mature themes, however, as the game is meant to explore a character's personality and psyche as well as human nature in all it's parts. Sexuality, trauma, conflict, war, morbid curiosity, (fictional) politics, religion - these are all key motives in EDEN Undone and can and should be explored in a way the group feels comfortable.

Recurring Themes

As a ttrpg with a huge focus on character development in a group, the game is embracing a concept that we call ‘The Fool’s Journey’ which we coined as a term for a spin-off to the classic ‘Hero’s Journey’ trope.   Goal of the game is to open up interesting paths and stories for characters which are far away from perfect, and maybe not even heroes. But they will evolve, grow and change inevitably during play.   Another huge part of the world and Karma-System is the motif of Otherness & Alienation translated into mystical and fantastic character traits.

Character Agency

Characters can start anywhere and get anywhere during play; navigating the seas of forming & reforming new societies in a world young and savage, but not without hope.
