Riečna
Riečna is the restless heartbeat of Teryk, where the Lash River’s currents pull commerce, conversation, and chaos into a seething dance. On the docks, barges sway under the load of timber, fish, and ore; rope-smoke mingles with the brine and the cries of gulls. Lanterns hang under wharf sheds, taverns howl with laughter long after midnight, and watchmen’s boots echo on gangplanks by lantern-light. In Riečna, every deal is weighed in coin and risk, and every shadow might hide both fortune and danger.
Demographics
Riečna is home to a bustling mix of riverfolk, dockhands, fishermen, and traders who form the backbone of Teryk’s working class. The ward has a higher percentage of halflings and dwarves than other districts, drawn by the trade opportunities along the Lash. Many halflings work as boat pilots and ferrymen, while dwarves often dominate the carpentry and shipwright trades. Wealth disparities are sharp here—prosperous merchants live in modest riverfront houses with private docks, while laborers and bargemen crowd into rickety tenements perched on stilts above the flood line.
Government
The ward is governed directly under the watchful eye of Sir Julian Rusnak, who acts as both noble patron and watch captain. His dual role ensures a strong arm of law at the docks, where tolls and tariffs are collected with precision, and smuggling is kept in check—at least the smuggling not protected by shadowy backroom deals. Rusnak maintains a practical approach to governance: stern with outsiders, fair to locals, but uncompromising when it comes to taxation. The dockside courts are swift, with fines or forced labor being the most common punishments.
Defences
The Lash itself serves as both a barrier and vulnerability—easy to patrol but hard to control when smugglers know the hidden shallows. A watchtower at the main ferry slip houses signal horns and ballistae, while river patrol boats crewed by militia make rounds during the night. Heavy iron chains can be drawn across the river channel to halt traffic during curfew or in times of siege. Still, the density of warehouses and narrow streets makes the district difficult to secure, a fact not lost on smugglers and thieves’ guilds.
Industry & Trade
The Riverside Ward thrives on river trade. Fishermen bring in daily catches of trout, pike, and sturgeon, while smokehouses and salters process much of the surplus for export. Dockhands load barges with timber and ore from the Ashen Spires, and unload imports of wine, cloth, and spices. Riečna is also home to rope-makers, sail-weavers, and coopers, all of whom support the constant flow of river commerce. Smuggling of untaxed goods—particularly liquor and Dhakaani relics rumored to come from the Shadowmount—is an open secret despite Sir Rusnak’s vigilance.
Infrastructure
The Riverside Ward is defined by its wharves, warehouses, and piers. Timber piles creak beneath the weight of barges unloading grain, lumber, and ores, while narrow lanes wind between ramshackle taverns, smokehouses, and net-menders’ stalls. A broad ferry slip connects Teryk to smaller riverside villages, and a stone toll bridge arcs across a narrow bend of the Lash, ensuring every wagon pays its due. Ropeworks, sail lofts, and fish markets cluster close to the docks, while the sewer lines of Novýtrh discharge near the water’s edge, leaving the air thick with mingled scents of trade and refuse.
Assets
Riečna’s wealth lies in its warehouses stacked with grain, timber, fish, and riverborne goods awaiting shipment inland. Several guild-owned storage houses are heavily guarded, while less reputable storehouses often double as fronts for contraband. Barges and riverboats are plentiful assets, ranging from small halfling punts to heavily-laden cargo scows. The ward also maintains a customs house, where official ledgers and toll records are stored under lock and key.
Guilds and Factions
The Dockworkers’ Guild dominates here, controlling hiring for longshore labor and extracting dues from river merchants. The Fishermen’s Brotherhood maintains tight control over the fish markets and negotiates quotas. Less openly, the “River Rats,” a smuggling consortium, maintain a foothold in the ward despite frequent crackdowns. These factions often clash, though all know better than to openly challenge the authority of Rusnak and the town watch.
History
Riečna’s roots stretch back before Teryk’s rise as a principality—its docks were once a simple ferry crossing used by Galifarian settlers. Over time, its proximity to the Lash made it indispensable, and the riverside gradually grew into the economic heart of the town. During the Last War, Riečna suffered repeated raids from river-borne skirmishers, and its wharves were once fortified with palisades and iron stakes against enemy boats. Many of those defenses remain in altered form.
Points of interest
The Customs House looms large at the center of the wharf, its clocktower bell marking the opening and closing of trade each day. The Smokefish Market is infamous for its pungent air but attracts buyers from across the region. The Iron Chain Bridge, with its toll station, is both a landmark and a choke point for trade. For those with darker tastes, the tavern known as The Drowned Rat serves as a meeting ground for smugglers, mercenaries, and those wishing to avoid official eyes.
Tourism
Few tourists come to Riečna for leisure, but travelers often pass through its inns and dockside taverns. Some are drawn to the spectacle of the fish markets or to catch ferries upriver. Wealthier visitors occasionally come for the novelty of riverboat gambling halls, where dice and cards flow as freely as ale. Those looking for more illicit entertainment also find the Riverside Ward accommodating, though at some risk to purse and neck alike.
Architecture
Buildings in Riečna are functional above all else: timber-framed warehouses with slate roofs, stilted houses perched above the waterline, and ramshackle taverns patched with tar and canvas. Many structures are painted in bright river blues or greens to ward off mildew, though the paint rarely hides the rot beneath. Nets and ropes are hung along walls, and carvings of fish or river creatures adorn doorposts as charms of good luck.
Geography
The Lash River defines this district. Its bowing curve creates a natural harbor, though the fast current makes navigation treacherous for the unskilled. Low-lying land often floods in spring, forcing locals to build on stilts or elevated stone foundations. Across the river, the dense Shadowmount forest looms, its dark trees mirrored in the water. The river’s constant roar and the cries of gulls are the ward’s eternal soundtrack, a reminder that life here is tied inextricably to the water.
