Personal history

Jack was the son of Rip Van Tillerman, better known to townsfolk as Old Man Tillerman. Rip was a gruff but fiercely loyal family man. He ran an old family pot still in the barn and gained a reputation as a well-known distiller of fine whiskey. When Jack was young, his father would sip on a glass of whiskey and smoke a wooden pipe while telling fantastic tales of all the creatures in Idriell. As he told the stories, the smoke rings from the pipe would form the shape of the creatures he described, which Jack and his ten siblings always found delightful.   When he grew older, Jack began sneaking out to the barn to sample his father’s whiskey. Curious, and wanting to be like his Pa, he added a few ingredients to try and make a batch himself. When he sampled it, he found it to be quite good but noticed that ever since there has been an odd energy surging inside him.   Growing up, Jack was responsible for helping out with repairs around the farm and taking care of the horses and other animals. While he was in the fields, he always brought with him a quarterstaff in case he had to fend off predators. Late one night, as he searched for a lost goat (an actual goat, not a warhorse), Jack found himself surrounded by a pack of ferocious wolves. As the wolves attacked, he swung at them with his quarterstaff. He had grown used to the strange energy that simmered inside him but this time it seemed to surge through his arms. The staff gained a faint green glow and each blow seemed surprisingly effective. Even as he defended himself against them, Jack felt a strange connection to the wolves and became fascinated with the way they coordinated their movements in packs to protect each other. He spent more and more time exploring deep into the woods around the farm to study the wildlife were he met an old hermit who started teaching him about his druidic powers.   At home, life returned mostly to normal until the night of darkness that descended on the farm. As Jack avenged his father’s death, he once again felt the power surge through him and knew that this moment would lead him to a greater purpose in life. Having seen the horrors of that night, he resolved that he would learn to control his powers to rid the land of the evils threatening his people.   With a new sense of mortality, he went into town the following morning and proposed to his childhood love interest, Sara O’Connor. The two grew up together and had been flirting for years while she worked as a barmaid at Galloran's Hearth, but Jack always felt too young to settle down. Now realizing a sense of urgency, the two were married within the week.   Jack and Sara eventually had a daughter, who they named Elva Harmony Tillerman. As a middle child in such a large family, Jack is used to being around kids and enjoys entertaining them with his father’s magic pipe.

Meet The Powder Smith (Gilnaith)
243 Winterwane 6th (2019-04-06)

DM: Doze   Party: Caelam Zefer Heartstone, Chris Rhodes, Guy, Jack Tillerman, Kaecil Kayessan, Kitarel Vesneyva, Mairena Vanyali, Reledor   Inside the Scriptorium, Jack sighs and sits down to debrief Arias on his recent trip to Gilnaith.   "We met Ellisar but I'm 'fraid even wit' your notes I wasn' able t' find out anythin' about th' Star Needle. Though I s'pose I should start at th' beginnin'..."   "Kaecil teleported us int' th' buildin' above th' armory with one o' those Collector constructs inside. They didn' seem t' care tha' Kaecil 's a citizen. They kept tellin' us t' leave, tha' we was in a restricted area so we thought it best t' listen. On'y soon as we were out th' door we saw a flash 'bout a mile out an' somethin' hit Kit hard in th' shoulder. I didn' know what was goin' on but after seein' the weapons those bots was carryin' I guess it must'a been somethin' sim'lar."   "Anyway, there was another Collector outside tha' started twitchin' wit' a angry red glow so we all ran back inside t' take cover, but the other Collector an' a couple o' smaller constructs started attackin' us. We fought fir a while but th' Collector grabbed me an' Mairena wit' some sort'a claws an' we was paralyzed. I managed t' break free, just in time 'cause after Kit hit it wit' an arrow th' thing started goin' crazy an' then blew up like a bad pot still, sendin' shards o' metal flyin' everywhere. Mairena fin'ly came aroun' too but I guess she 'ad enough, 'cause she teleported back t' town mutterin' somethin' about Gilnaith bein' a filthy place."   "We went through a bunch o' doors an' past tha' pill machine tha' makes spells but wit' all the alarms goin' off we thought it best t' keep movin'. Further on we ran int' a room wit' a big hole in tha' floor. Sounded like a bunch o' metal was bangin' aroun' down below but it was too far t' see anythin. There were two more Collectors in there an a bunch o' smaller constructs. Some o' the smaller ones seemed t' be some sort'a officers an' they were a lot stronger. Th' officers were able t' dispel magic an' counter attack us. The Collectors 'ad some sort'a anti-magic too 'f they looked at you wit' those red eyes. We fought them fir a long time an' Chris and tha' Guy both wen't down. I managed t' get 'em back up but it wasn' easy, Chris was takin' an awful beatin' an' went down a couple times. After we killed 'em all, it got dark an' some sort of dim red lights came on. Couple o' people started feelin' tired so Kaecil brought us int' a demiplane so we could rest."   "When Kaecil teleported us back, we were stuck in a tiny room wit' another Collector an' two more o' the officers. After we kill'd 'em things got pretty bad. There was some sort'a door needin' a password but before we were able t' open it some sort'a gas started comin' in. Kit an' Rel pas'd out soon as it started, I tried t' hold out but I must'a pas'd out too. Nex' thing I remember is wakin' up in some kind'a temple Chris made t' keep us out o' the gas."   "Apparently they was able t' get through th' door usin' the password Tharizdun, an' Chris used th' wind t' keep th' gas out as long as he could 'till he had t' build th' temple. Rel said he 'ad a pretty wild dream while he was out, on'y he got some new bracers when he woke up so I don' know how much of a dream it was. You'd prob'ly 'ave t' ask him if you want t' know more but I guess he learnd how t' get to Ellisar in th' dream 'cause we followed 'im through some old research offices an' ended up meetin' her in a big open room tha' looked like a field surroundin' it. 'Cept when we got close we saw some blood an' what looked like a bunch o' empty jail cells."   "We met her in th' middle o' the room but she didn' look like a elf anymore, seemed t' be fused wit' a bunch o' metal 'n gears kin'a like tha' guy Eddie but ... more. An' she was stuck t' the floor. Turn'd out she was able t' help Caelam fuse 'is swords t'gether but Kit 'ad t' give her the Nightstaff so she could do it. She also offered t' make copies o' th' stuff we 'ad so Guy got a copy of 'is armor. I tried t' ask 'er about th' Star Needle an' if there were any other powder smiths still alive but she started gettin' tha' red spark like th' Collectors an' said she couldn' help. I thought it best not t' push but we didn' 'ave much chance anyway. Somethin' happened an' she just went limp in front of us right before all th' lights in th' whole place went off."   "We managed t' get out o' there an' outside th' city was chaos. There was demons an' monsters runnin' aroun' th' jungle, an' some sort'a flyin' skeleton machine flew up above us an' started yellin' about th' city bein' locked down an' tellin' us t' leave. We were gettin' ready t' leave when two goblin's ridin' on some strange two wheel'd machines took off away from th' city. Kaecil sent a meteor storm at 'em for some reason an' then we all got out o' there wit'out waitin' t' see what else would happen."

Attack on the Frontiersmen!

DM: Everllot
Party: Arias Dreisari, Fabian, Folwin, Ieara Biros, Jack Tillerman, Kaecil Kayessan, Varan Themenor, Yuki Woodbrink   Jack pins a note to the board at Galloran's Hearth.   To anyone headin out to the wilds, be on alert fir a group a organized hobgoblins.   A couple a the frontiersmen came to town hollerin about organized attacks n requestin help. Sounded pretty bad so Kaecil, Varan, Fabian, Folwin, Arias, Yuki, Ieara and I formed up a party to take care of em. On the way there we heard some noises from the woods an a couple a the party started to look a bit charmed as some dryads came outta the trees. I didn’t think they looked to be harmful but I think Fabian got a little nervous n fired off a shot. Thankfly Arias run out wavin her arms ‘n was able to stop us before things got too outta hand. The dryads proved t’ be friendly once we stopped t’ talk to em and one of em named Shhhheila led us to the cave were the hobgoblin’s was camped out.   When we got to the mouth a the cave, Arias was gettin ready to send Peggy to scout when Ieara took off down a tunnel ahead a the group. We all ran after her n wound up in some sorta barracks starin at four angry hobgoblins with their swords drawn. Varan charged and killed one of em and then I watched in shock as Yuki walked up to try an talk to em. We managed to kill two more after Ieara shouted at em with lightnin breath and I shaped into an Ape to rescue Yuki. Couldn let him run into danger like that after nearly losin him just days before. Course Yuki jumped on my back and grabbed the last hobgoblin that was tryin to run away so I bashed in it’s skull with a fist pound.   Kaecil ducked around a corner across the hall and run into four more hobgoblins. He killd one of em and I ran over to jump in front of him and help out, gettin surrounded by the other three. Varan also ran up killin one of em. Then Yuki tripped one while Ieara bent down an slit its throat. I dropped Yuki safely off my back and charged at the final hobgoblin, pounding him into the ground with two surprisinly strong fist bashes.   We went back to the main hall an heard marchin noises comin from the northern passage. Arias quickly put up an image at the end of the passage to look like a stone wall while the rest of us got into formation. Six more hobgoblins approached an one of em poked the wall, showin it to be an illusion as Kaecil threw a firebolt to incinerate im. The one behind im slumped from one a Fabian’s arrows just before Varan run up to em and swung his sword in an impressive burst a fury that sliced three of em in half. I ran up an crushed the last one just as fourteen more in from another room assaultin’ me till I had to turn back to human form.   That’s when Yuki an Ieara run off to investigate the barracks we cleared out earlier. Arias sent Peggy ahead to explore, then moved off to the barracks as well when she couldn’t do anythin’ else to help out. Thankf’ly Kaecil stepped up to the front line an threw one of ‘is famous fireballs at em takin’ down most a the group. I pulled out my staff an the last one’s head flyin just before we heard some thunderous marchin near the entrance to the cave and twenty nine more hobgoblins showed up and their commander halted the formation.   Fabian killed one of em with a bow attack but thankf’ly Kaecil was able to throw one more fireball, killin all but five of em. I followed his attack by raisin some spikes out a the ground an tryin to stop em from movin. I was able to kill two more but the last three, includin the leader started to run away. That’s when Folowin and Kaecil stepped in and took out the leader with a barrage of magic missiles. With only two left, I was able to harness a beam of moonlight to sear the skin off one of em but the other escaped into the woods. We checked out the rest of the cave an found the leaders room with a chest holdin an interestin sword that popped out from the hilt and a dwarven skull that really seems to hate anyone wit elven blood. None a the hobgoblins had a lot a strength to be worried of but it was concernin that they was all so exception’ly organized. Be on the watch an don’t take this threat lightly.   Signed,
Jack Tillerman

Hunting For Pearls

DM: 90Leprechauns
Party: Yuki, Traains Weck, Arias Dreisari, Jack Tillerman   After a day out in the wilds, Jack sits on the edge of Liam’s bed and recounts his latest adventure.   Jack: “Traain’s asked me t’ help ‘im take Miss Dreisari t’ the pearl beds t’day. She needed t’ fin’ a special pearl for one a her spells, and Yuki decided t’ come wit’ us.”   Liam: “Did you fin’ the pearl?”   Jack: ruffles Liam’s hair with a chuckle “Aye, I’m gettin’ t’ that part, be patient. We headed out early in th’ mornin’ and Traains took th’ lead. We nearly got lost on th’ trail n’ we run into a couple a giant crabs on th’ way there but Miss Dreisari ‘s real smart ‘n conjured up an image of a giant seagull. Never seen crabs skitter away so fast. Traains was quick on th’ draw though an’ shot one of em while he was runnin’ off. He was in real bad shape but still livin’ so I went up and crack’d his shell wit’ me staff so Yuki could make us all dinner. We kept on our way ‘n Miss Dreisari brought along th’ seagull jest ‘n case we run into any more crabs.”   “When we got to th’ pearl beds, Miss Dreisari took a look at th’ water ‘n said she knew jest where we should look, so Yuki uh…stripped down dove into the water and started swimmin’ to th’ bottom. That’s when I turnt into a crocodile so I could breath under th’ water ‘n use me sharp teeth if it were needed. When Traains saw it was safe, he jumped in too ‘n we all got a good bit o’ pearls before comin’ back t’ shore.” Jack holds out a small pearl for Liam to see.   Liam: “Wow, cool!”   Jack: “We was all famished, so Yuki cooked us all up a seafood feast wit’ all th’ oysters we crack’d open ‘n that bit a crab. Then someone noticed a woman tied up on a rock out ‘n the water ‘n she was callin’ to us fir help.”   As Sara is walking by, she stops quietly to lean on the doorway and raises an eyebrow as Jack mentions the woman. Jack looks up at her with a mischievous smirk and continues the story.   Jack: “She was almost as beautiful as me Sara, ‘n we couldn’ leave someone out there in trouble, so Yuki jumped on me back and I swam ‘im out t’ the rock. Can’t never trust a beautiful woman in th’ wild though.” He says, looking back at Sara with a laugh as she throws a rag at him. “Soon as we got close, she turnt int’ a butt ugly sea hag ‘n lashed out at us wit’ her claws. Then another hag ‘n four Sahuagin popped up outta th’ water t’ attack us. I was able t’ get one a th’ hags caught up in me jaw fir a moment but she slipped loose pretty quick.” “Then Miss Dreisari started whisperin’ things to one a th’ Sahuagin’ that would give you nightmares ‘n it tried t’ run away. Made a big mistake though runnin’ close enough fir me t’ snap ‘im in half wit’ me croc teeth. Two a th’ other Sahuagin didn’ even know what hit em when Traains sent a couple a bolts sailin’ right into their chests.”   “Yuki thought it best we got out o’ their reach so he jumped on me back ‘n made us both invisible. That ole hag swung at where she thought we were but she missed ‘n they all dove into th’ water and swum off t’ fin’ more prey. On our way back t’ shore, I spotted ‘em under th’ water but kept goin’ so Yuki could get t’ dry land. Then the hag popped out ‘n musta seen the ripples I was leavin’ in th’ water cause she jumped out at me wit’ her claws again. Miss Dreisari started usin’ them terrible whispers on her though ‘n I was able t’ snap her up when she tried t’ run away. While I kept her still, Traains fired off a few shots that stopped her from squirmin’ ‘n the last Sahuagin popped out a th’ water next t’ us.”   “Yuki was able to grapple him and Arias persuaded him to surrender ‘n started t’ interrogate him. He was pretty upset that our ships was pollutin’ the water ‘n said our people made tasty food. He didn’ know anythin’ about the red storm off th’ shore but he did tell us where t’ fin’ the treasure from the Sirens in exchange fir lettin’ him live. We found a couple o’ fancy potions ‘n some strange orange eggs that Miss Dreisari took t’ study. Then we headed back here t’ get some sleep. Speakin’ a sleep, I think it’s about time you got some yerself.”   Jack tucks Liam in and smiles, picking Sara up in a warm embrace on their way out of the room.

Looking for Trouble

DM: Everllot
Party: Traains Weck, Galdric Manuel, Kaecil Kayessan, Delnis Ahlorsath, Jack Tillerman   Jack sits down with his younger brother Liam to tell him the tale of his latest adventure   Aye Liam, ‘twas an adventure indeed. We run into three giant spiders not far from here. They tried to restrain Traains Weck wit their sticky webbing but nobody can restrain Traains. Once he got free of those webs he shot two of em right between the eyes wit deadly aim.   Not too long after that we went to the pearl beds near the family farm. We found a good bit a pearls but we also run into some nasty Sahuagin at the edge of the water. Lucky fer us, we had warnin’ from the alarm that Galdric setup. When you git old enough to travel on yer own, make sure you’re always alert fer danger. Idriell may have a lot of adventure but tis also full o’ danger. Delnis and Traains took the brunt o’ the attack n’ we managed to get rid of em awful quick. Shoulda seen Traains kill three of em’ in six seconds. Never seen anyone so quick wit’ a crossbow. We made a mistake though n’ decided to rest near the water. Five more of the beasts showed up n’ attacked at night. I fought beside the others, swattin’ at em wit’ me staff before we took em all down.   He shows Liam the Sahuagin teeth   Remember what I said ‘bout bein alert for danger. If you need to rest, make sure yer in a safe place first.   We kept travellin’ till we come upon a lake. At the edge of the water there was an orc who was hurt mighty bad. He couldn’ talk and was raspin’ for air so I did what I could to stabilize his wounds. While I was kneelin’ down next to ‘im a woman rose up out o’ the water carryin’ a sword. She was the most beautiful woman I ever seen, well ‘cept for your mother and yer sister n’law o’course. Her voice sounded like chimes an’ she spoke in a strange language but I knew everythin’ she was sayin.’ If only you coulda heard it. She gave me this sword for havin’ a pure heart and helpin’ an enemy.   Jack sets down the sword and Liam pulls on the handle trying to lift it   Remember that Liam, sometimes we have to do things that don’ make sense cause they’re the right thing to do.   When we crossed the river we found an ancient ruin. Everythin’ was crumbled ‘cept for four statues that were used for some sorta ritual. Galdric thought they was…   He cuts off as he remembers who he’s talking to   Well, that’s not important. While we was at the ruins we got attacked by some angry orcs and had no choice but to fight ‘em. I entangled a couple of ‘em in some vines and Galdric kept ‘em slippin’ and slidin’ in puddles of grease while Kaecil threw a giant fireball that killed three of ‘em. Everyone else kept fightin’ em and I changed into a wolf to help out with some vicious bites until we killed ‘em all.   On the way home we was attacked by some trees that was affected by the blight. They had us completely surrounded an’ things was startin’ to feel hopeless but we managed to run out of the way while Kaecil lit them all up wit’ another giant fireball. Never seen such a big bonfire in me life.   We went back by the same route n’ despite me tracking skills we never found that lake. I suspect it was some sorta magic. Idriell is full o’ strange magic indeed. Sometimes it can be beautiful but you always got to be weary of dangerous magic as well. Aye well, guess it’s past time you got yerself into bed.

The Raven Queen Conspiracy

DM: Doze
Party: Apollo Hawkscar, Taranis Skoll, Delnis Ahlorsath, Futch Foom'Pa, Handollaf Obici, Holg Braak, and Jack Tillerman   The following letter is posted on the board in Galloran's Hearth. The top of the page is marked with a druidic symbol for the raven.   Fair warnin' to all ye travelers. Keep yer eyes on the sky and be on yer guard fir a conspir'cy from the Raven Queen. 'twas on me way to the hearth yesterday when one of the fellas from johnson n' jonson's mine come runnin' up all outta breath. Said some creatures was wreakin' havoc n' kil't one of th' miners. He was too 'fraid to say much else, so we headed out to check on the mine.   'long the way we seen some shy critt'rs in the woods. Thought it best to keep goin' but Futch wanted to stop n' chatter. Turnt out they was frendly pixies n' they made Futch fly. 'Twas the giddy'st kenku I ever seen. Sad ta say it didn' las long. We was all ill prepared fir what we was walkin' into.   There was nothin' left of the poor miner but Apollo didn' pay no mind ta danger n' walked strait up to the mine wit' a brave face an' 'is clankin' armor. 'Fore we knew what was comin' we was swarmed by thousands of angry ravens coverin' the sky like a dark cloud. Apollo tried to disapp'r but those ravens still run inta 'im. Nex' thing we know, a ploom of snowballs burst through the swarm right 'fore we hear a piercin' scream and see Apollo reapp'r in a pool 'a blood.   I tried to entangel 'em under a canopy a' vines but they slipp'd right through and didn' pay no mind to Futch yellin' at 'em to disperse either. Delnis was swattin' like a tank while Taranis and Handollaf went back to back to fight off a massive swarm. Futch took out some sort'a magic sword and 'im and Holg tried to help out Delnis. There was so many of 'em flyin' round it didn' seem to matter how hard we swung at 'em so I start'd thrown' flames at all of 'em I could see.   'Twas slow goin' but we manag'd to knock em all outta th' sky one by one. Futch ran to Apollo's side soon as he could get to 'im and lucky for 'im he was able to gently repose 'is body. 'Twas a somber ride back to town but we all 'ave a little hope we kin manage ta find someone 'kin bring Apollo back. If I never see 'nother raven again it'll be too soon. Bad 'nough the pesky creatures wreck havoc on me cornfield, but I won' soon forget this terrible unkindness.   Only thing good ta come outta tha whole nightmare 's this big rock I found. The Jo(h)nson's say 'tis some sorta gem could be a real treasure. Guess i'll haveta fin' someone wants ta buy it. Could be a awful lot'a money for a fam'ly a farmers. Oh 'n we managed ta get the mine runnin' again so I 'spose that was good too.   Aye, well. Consider yerselvs warned,   Jack Tillerman

Death Approaches
Winterwane 13, 241

The following letter is pinned to the board at Galloran’s Hearth   To the townsfolk of Vareholm,   Two nights past, our family farm was attacked by some bloody gruesome beasts. They razed our farm and set fire to our crops. I’m not sure why they buggered off but it was bloody lucky they did. Me Pa, who many of you like to call Old Man Tillerman, was able to grab some sturdy fellas who was patrollin’ the outskirts nearby. If it hadn’t been for Radmac Snowson, Hadollof Obici, Taranis Skoll, Boaz Hamison, Neris and Mikallan Aerendyl, I might not be here today.   Four of the family was injured by those beasts but Handollaf and Taranis was able to help Mama get them patched up. The rest of us was pretty sure those brutes was fixin’ to come back so we got to work on buildin’ up some barricades. Well ‘cept for that one character Boaz that turned and rode off int’a the woods for some odd reason.   Anyways, ‘tis a good thing we got them walls up when we did, eye. Soon as dawn dusk fell, twas’ like hell itself opened up and an army of death descended on our little farm. Pa went outside to face ‘em and I did me best to comfort the family inside the house. I dunno how long it’d been but one of those patrol fellas came rushin’ in. Strange lookin’ elven creature with a big feath’ry wing, only one was broke like some sorta fall’n angel. He burst in yellin’ some kinda jibberish. Hard to understand, that one. We thought he was tryin’ to run away.   Whatever he was sayin’ he gave up when he saw that beauty of a horse they called a goat get taken down by a blow to the side. Ran out like a bloody fool but he managed to save the horse. Twas’ a bit of bad luck that giant skeleton creature showed up when he tried to run back to the house. Filthy beast took the elf’s head clean off his shoulders. ‘is body slumped over the horse’s back when he fell and then I saw the most horribly beautiful thing I ever saw. A single beam of sunli’te broke over the mount’n and cast itself on the elf as tho’ from the heavens. ‘is good wing was draped over his broken body like a brilliant white banner with blood red stripes and then that crazy horse stood up and limped away from the battle, barely clingin’ to life.   Pa was so inspired he run in yellin’ for us to grab some weapons an’ defend our home. We rushed out an’ started swingin’ at anythin’ we could see when that dwarf cleric Handollaf started channelin’ the powers of the heavens and sent them giants runnin’ scared.   Everyone thought it best to shelter up in the house in case those creatures got their nerve back and sure ‘nuff they showed up swingin’ axes through the windows. They managed to break in and nearly put an end to that warlock guy Neris, but he hobbled up the stairs to safety. The rest of us followed Pa and rushed the beasts to keep them from getting to the children upstairs. Then the last of them giant monsters cut down Pa right before my eyes. I was so angry I stopped thinkin’ and a powerful surge of energy flowed into my quarterstaff as I swung at that bloody beast’s midsection. His bones crack’d like eggshells and crumpled to the floor in a heap’a dust.   Once the dust was settled, the paladin Taranis went to the woods to find his donkey that ran away durin’ the fight. He never did find the donkey but said he saw some strange creature flappin’ in the shadows. I should prob’ly check that out, I know these woods like the back of me hands but I never heard of no shadows wit’ wings.   The others from the patrol asked if they could bury their friend on the farm and get some rest in the house. They made a big fuss about the ceremony and used the elve’s shield to mark his grave. ‘Twas sort of a strange request since we hadn’t met ‘im until last night but he did help defend our home an’ we was all mighty grateful. Anyway, I was too weary to worry ‘bout their concerns.   They left me and me brothers to bury Pa on our own. Can’t hold it against ‘em though, ‘tis for the best we take care of our own family business. We cut him humble marker in the customary style of our people and buried him near the barn with a short prayer for a peaceful rest.   Those hellish giants sure left a mess of tracks from tramplin’ the farm but we never did find out where they come from. I did manage to find this old journal that belonged to the elf. Must have fallen outta his things and gotten missed.   Oh, and dunno know why that patrol kep’ callin’ me Jon, sounds like the name of some bloke from Neverwinter. I’ve been here since th' beginnin' and you all ought to know me proper name by now.   Signed,
Jack Tillerman
