Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rick was brought to Glendale as a trafficked child who ultimately was subjected to horrible and inhumane experiments conducted by Dr. Estella Bandoni.
A young Jenelle Fuentez happens upon the warehouse where Rick was imprisoned. She helps him escape, and finds him a home by seeking aid from her primary school teacher, Beatrice Cully.
The two quickly bonded and now Rick and Jenelle will go to the ends of the world to help one another.

Prior to Rick's Birth
- 1988: Rick's birth parents, Avi and Chava, were in an arranged marriage and members of the Orthodox community. Even while pregnant, Avi verbally and physically abused Chava, often threatening Chava that he could cast Chava out once she had the baby. Avi would boast to Chava that he had dropped hints to members of the community that Chava had been unfaithful while on a trip to Brazil and that he suspected the baby’s parentage. This led to Chava’s isolation in the community, leaving her completely dependent on Avi. Believing that a quiet, plain dressed Orthodox mother would make for a perfect drug mule, Avi would often have Chava run cocaine between Tel Aviv and Sao Paulo.
- 1993: Once Chava discovers she is pregnant with twins, she decides to make an escape. Instead of delivering the cocaine she was meant to deliver to an agent of the Abravanel family, Chava made a break for it and hid with a non-Jewish friend.

Rick and Layla's Birth: April 16, 1993
- 1993: In secret Chava sells the cocaine she stole from Avi and sells it to a street dealer for a fraction of it’s worth. The money was still enough for Chava to create a life for herself, Rick, and Rick's twin sister Layla, under a new identity in Rio for several years.
- June, 2001: Chava’s cover is blown. Avi’s goons find her in her apartment in Rio. When confronted, she insists that she lost the babies. The goons kill her while Rick and Layla hide in the closet. Unaware of their existence and wanting to make a quick get away the goons don’t bother to check the apartment. Traumatized and afraid for their life, Rick and Layla packs a few treasured belongings, like some photos and a teddy bear, then leaves the apartment forever. The pair make friends with a street gang in Rio’s favela (slum) and stays alive by pick pocketing tourists on the beach.
- July, 2001: Dr. Bandoni does experiments on children to determine how far they can be pushed psychologically when faced with constant fear - before they ultimately die of heart failure. Her experiments are grim and end up costing a high toll in body count. In order to keep her experiments secret, Dr. Bandoni travels to developing countries to abduct and bring back to Glendale. While hunting street children in Brazil, Dr. Bandoni finds Layla and entices her by offering food and shelter. On the way to Dr. Bandoni’s holding area, Layla happily chatters mentioning how hungry she is, but asks if they could go find her twin brother so he can enjoy the food as well. Dr. Bandoni is intrigued. She has started a super soldier program and had decided to use twins as guinea pigs for her experimental injections and . Dr Bandoni tries to use Layla to lure Rick, but he does not trust this foreign doctor and runs away. Caging Layla, Dr. Bandoni continues her hunt for Rick. The next day she spots Rick pickpocketing tourists at the beach, so she has one of her goons grab Rick pretending that he is being apprehended and taken in to face charges. The shocked tourists are happy to have their wallets back and cheer on the fake police officer as he drags Rick away. Finally satisfied that she’s collected enough specimens, Dr. Bandoni loads the cages onto a ship and sails back to Canada.

- Post-traumatic stress disorder: Rick is a veteran of a war and survivor of a car bombing. Rick suffers from chronic nightmares and flashbacks. He does not go in vehicles unless absolutely necessary.
- Dissociative disorder: Rick suffers from Psychogenic amnesia meaning he has completely repressed his time served in the IDF. When asked about his time in Israel, he flatly replies that he doesn't remember anything from the years he was there.

- Rick presents himself as a hardened soldier. He is dismissive, cool headed and headstrong, often insisting he knows the best way to deal with challenges presented to the team. He carries himself as an expert and is consistently professional, even when it’s unnecessary. His serious demeanour earns him the nickname “Boss” from Jenelle despite the fact that he doesn’t claim to be the group’s leader.
