Glendale

Originally settled 6000 years ago by First Nations people, the site was continuously inhabited until French settlers came to the area in 1738.
The British government secured the area in 1763 and established the city of Glendale in 1812. The city was built on what was, at the time, a Cree settlement. The Cree inhabitants were forcibly removed from the area and relocated to a rocky island off the coast of Avalon in what is now the White Bear Reservation.    When Canada formed in 1867, the British colonists in Avalon refused to acknowledge the newly established government, preferring to stay loyal to the British crown. When emissaries to the British parliament failed to secure British protectorate status, the wealthy Glendale family decided to declare Avalon an independent nation. Due to it's small size and isolated location, the newly formed government of Canada failed to notice this rogue nation within it's borders.    Over the years Glendale has grown slowly. Tourism is minimal and there is relatively little travel between Canada and Avalon. Citing the need for a cheap workforce, the government of Glendale decided to encourage immigration from Eastern Europe and Asia starting in the 1980s. The influx of immigrants helped to diversify Glendale's population.
