Southwest Shoals
The Southwest Shoals are a collection of shallow reefs and shoals in the Southwest of the Kaiyocean Ocean. These shoals have a long history, longer than even the Shogunate of Kaiyocea. Thought to be distantly related to the people of Old Ealamkha'fif, who split off and established a colony by traveling East, rather than West, these people share a language with many different dialects, which is not too far from Tradespeak. They also boast an extremely long lived and rich culture, with unique ways of life, inventions, music and food. With community centers being many, and places of both gathering and worship being important to the Shoals. Nami Mono is the dominant religion in the area, with some who hail from Kaiyocea bringing the worship of Kiyokanis. Exports are mostly carefully crafted goods, with jewelry, common goods and Arcanarms. The architecture and aesthitics are notably different from Kaiyocea, with squat, rectangular buildings with smooth edges and flowing patterns, as well as huge, single leveled, open aired buildings, often in shapes important to their function.
The shoals are ruled by a confederation of cities, which elect leaders who vote for region-wide issues. The shoals engage in hefty trade with the Southern trenches, who refuse direct shogunate involvement, and instead trade and interact through the Southeast shoals. The southwest shoals have much greater interactions with Aerava as well, and particularly the Half-Wing Gulls.
About 150 years ago, The Period of the Ocean's Expansion occurred as Kaiyocea fought to spread it's territory, both across the ocean as well as the other Realms. The Southwest Shoals had it particularly rough, as very few Aeravan adventurer or forces could lend assistance, being preoccupied defending their own nation. This left the Southwest Shoals more or less on their own. However, with support and forces from the Southern Trenches (a very rare thing) and the Half-Wing Gulls, the Shoals began their guerilla war to defend their territory. Acting as combat medics and support for the Gulls, the long resistance against Kaiyoce culminated in the arrival of Aeravan adventurers, allowing the Shoals and Gulls to gain air support, and push the Shogunate back, in a battle that came to be known as The One Wave's Push. Despite this bloody conflict, the Shoals have long since advanced and grown, with the conflict being viewed as important to their culture, but against a different Kaiyocea than the one today. With reconstruction being quick, and Kaiyocea's next Shogun giving reoperations and assistance for a century, the Kaiyocean government has taken responsibility for their war, allowing the shoals to grow more accustomded to the Kaiyocean shogunate.
However, Kaiyocea's current situation with the Shoals is a tense dance, with each side becoming more and more careful when interacting. This is due to increased tensions, especially around the governing of the Shoals, and the conflict of interests with the Shogunate. A growing rebellious attitude towards the Shogunates culminates in trade manipulation to avoid tariffs and using Aeravan adventurers and the Half-Wing Gulls to defend their lands, an act viewed as a weakness by the Kaiyocean government and a lack of trust.
