Goblin

Goblins are a race native to the Eastern continent. Small, vicious, and cruel, they thrive in the untamed jungles and fringes of civilized society.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Goblins have mouths filled with sharp, needle-like teeth, that often grow in irregularly.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Goblins are native to the centrally located jungles of the Eastern Continent, where there are dozens of small Goblin kingdoms, known as the Petty Kingdoms to outsiders. One of the most notable of these is the port of Zukgrub. Some can be found within the Trading Coalition, particularly Destina and Nuovo Tezzano, and Fleurgurd. Some can be found in the southern reaches of the Empire of Xin, especially in Heizhu.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Goblins are generally foul, vicious, and cruel.   Goblins have often been the weakest creatures in their immediate area, often defeated by Orcs and Lizardfolk. They are only able to defeat these stronger creatures through cunning and trickery, and Goblins are often known to have a wicked deceit. They often use ambushes, traps, poisons, and other "dishonorable" methods in battle.   They seek to prove their power and dominance. Strong goblins bully weak goblins, who in turn bully the weakest. They have been known to cruelly enslave both Goblins and other races.   Goblins do not have a sense of beauty or art. Their works often appear crude, dirty, and filthy, but they are ruggedly practical and effective. Goblins sometimes accumulate treasure with artistic value taken from other cultures, not out of appreciation, but to demonstrate their power. For instance, most Goblins would prefer a rusty, vicious dagger over an engraved blade, unless that blade was a trophy from a previous victory. Goblin construction often appears to be a haphazard patchwork of scavenged materials, but it is surprisingly sturdy and practical.   They are able to operate in conditions that other races would find repulsive without being disgusted. For instance, Goblins are known to not be troubled by the foul smells of sewers and trash.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Goblins are often viewed with suspicion and disgust by Humans. In Human societies, Goblins often live on the fringes, where they work in the jobs that Humans do not care for: scavengers, trash collectors, sewer operators, and leather workers. Goblins also have a reputation of being involved with criminal activities in Human cities, including theft, extortion, and smuggling. In Fleurgurd, Goblins are often hired as disposable mercenaries by the knights.   Goblins are an ancient enemy of the Orc people. Goblins generally fear the mighty strength of the Orcs, but use their cunning and trickery to bring them down. The alliance between Lurian knights and Goblin saboteurs was key to defeating the Orcs in Fleurgurd, something that Orcs have never forgiven Goblins for.   Lizardfolk see Goblins as another food source, and Goblins are careful in swamps and marshes where Lizardfolk are known to reside.   Some Goblins live in the southern reaches of the Xin Empire, where they live in fear of the Dragon Lords.   Certain scholars have advanced a theory that the Bugbears of Vladkimir are related to the Goblins, despite their obvious physical differences.
