Fleurgurd

Fleurgurd is a nation of knightly orders, who conquered the Orcish nations during the Heroic Era.

Structure

The leader of Fleurgurd is the Knight-General. The Knight-General is selected through seniority and rank, with the blessing of the Church of Absyun.

Culture

Fleurgurd values martial strength and knightly valor. Knights will often duel against one another in matters of honor, and jousts and tournaments are common. There is a high value placed on honor during combat. Knights are not just expected to be strong, but to live the values of a knight.   Kenku have taken up residence in the eastern ruins of Fleurgurd. They are viewed with suspicion and hostility by the knights.

History

Fleurgurd is the ancestral homeland of the Orc people, who built several notable settlements in the jungles. The jungles were also home to Goblins and Lizardfolk.   In 5592, Lurian colonists began creating trading posts along the coast, particularly near the Riviere Rose. Conflict between the settlers and the Orcs grew until the Orcs attacked these trading posts. In response, a crusade of Lurian knights came to the defense of the settlers in 5631. The Orcs proved a formidable opponent, and individual Orcs could defeat multiple human knights.   The knights arrived in Fleurgurd with strong traditions of martial honor, but faced with the reality of war in a dense jungle, these aspirations quickly faded. The humans fought using their numbers and systematic coordination, denying the Orcs the chance for a fair fight. The initial crusade would meet success by 5642, securing the immediate coast for settlers. The leading order of knights, the Fleurgurd, built a large fortification called the Chateau du Soleil at the mouth of the Riviere Rose, which quickly became the main port and capitol for the region.   Continued expansion along the river into the jungle resulted in a series of wars. As the wars continued, the knights began hiring the local Goblin tribes as mercenaries and engaging in underhanded tactics. The final battle occured at Dal Marbruz, which withstood years of sieges and assualts, only to fall when the human knights and Goblins poisoned the water supplies of the citadel. After the war, the few remaining Orcs were forced from their lands by the Lurians, banished permanently in 5739.   The Marru-Lurian Wars began in 5737, and with the defeat of the Orcs, the knightly orders were soon called to battle. With the destruction of the Halfling homeland, many came to Fleurgurd as refugees. After the wars, many knights joined the Marru Crusade of 5893.   After The War of the Eagles and the resulting collapse of the Lurian Empire, the Fleurgurd knightly order led the new government.   Today, Fleurgurd is a nation without a clear rationale or purpose. The knightly orders rest on the laurels of wars long ago fought, remembering only romanticized legends of their great deeds. Peasants, both Human, Halfling, and Goblin, work to harvest crops for export, with the funds providing for the fanciful lives of the knights. In the wilds live Kenku and Goblin tribes, who sometimes raid the farming villages and provoke an armed response from the knights.

Territories

Chateau du Soleil is the capitol of Fleurgurd, on the mouth of the Riviere Rose. Many of the key settlements lie along the coast and major river. The rainforest has been largely felled along these waterways to create room for agriculture. Far from the main settlements, the jungle continues to reign, with forgotten Orcish ruins buried deep in the jungle. Kenku are said to have taken up residence in many of these ruins.

Religion

Fleurgurd's primary deity is Absyun. There are close ties between the Church of Absyun and the knightly orders.
