The Darkwood Forest

The Darkwood Forest is a massive forest that takes up a significant portion of the center of Obeavos. Despite separating major cities like Khalan from resource-heavy areas, the Darkwood has no major trade networks or patrolled roads running through it. Many stories exist of the true nature surrounding the Darkwood Forest, ranging from ancient druidic cults protecting their secrets to entryways to the feywild or the nine hells themselves. One thing they all agree on, however, is the nature of the forest: malevolent.   The Darkwood Forest is mostly unexplored and undocumented, though many attempts have been made. The city of Khalan made several attempts, especially before becoming a part of the Selenavi Republic in an attempt to bypass the monopolized trade network. However, each and every attempt has fizzled to nothingness, and no matter how many trees were cleared, the forest never quite seemed to shrink or grow any less hostile. Additionally, exploration and military groups would often find themselves accosted by creatures and peoples native to the forest, who wished their lands to be left alone. Deciding it was not currently worth the manpower and resources, Annalise Feywine officially recognized the forest as its own sovereign entity and affords no protection to those who would venture into it.   Deep inside its borders, the Darkwood Forest does contain many unique herbs, plants, and salves that have properties highly coveted by enchanters and sages alike. As a result, adventurers and treasure hunters will often enter the forest. Many are never heard from again, but those who return speak of terrifying creatures and shadow-like beings that stalk any who enter their territory.   Occasionally a monster from the forest will stray beyond its trees and begin terrorizing nearby cities. While the Selenavi Republic's military has little trouble protecting its boarders, other towns such as Maksur found themselves in a tight spot. However, thanks to a concerted effort from the townspeople, including a rumored legendary Hunter, they have managed to protect themselves while remaining independent.   Adventurers willing to test their metal can find treasure and challenge in the Darkwood, as well as a theoretical shortcut across the center of the continent if necessary. However, the deeper you go into the forest, the more dangerous enemies you will find.
