Unex Multin

Spiritblade Unex Multin (a.k.a. The Necromancer)

The Demigod son of Norac and Tamis, and famously the very first Spiritblade.

Artifacts

Whilst not created by him, Unex as the first Spiritblade is heavily associated with the following artefacts given to him by the eight Senima:
  • Anima, acquired by completing the Test of Courage for Norac. The Anima is a helmet with an armoured mask with a twisted visage that inspires fear in all that see it. The façade seems to change of it own free will, and tears of blood run down grooves decorating the mask when the wearer is in a heightened emotional state.
  • Aegor, acquired by completing the Test of Survival for Taemess. The Aegor is a bow that imbues its arrows with a variety of poisons and diseases, as well as the magical ability to bypass natural resistances and even immunities to such ailments.
  • Saxum, acquired by completing the Test of Endurance for Naeten. The Saxum is an armour harness made from plates and fibres woven from stone harvested in the divine mines of Mytheria. The strength of the armour is unparalleled, able to withstand tremendous pressure and damage without losing its integrity.
  • Squama, acquired by completing the Test of Adaptability for Allyce. The Squama is a shield made from the scales of a king lung dragon. The nature of the scales make the shield lightweight, streamlined, and hydrophobic, whilst also being stronger than most mundane materials. As with the dragon from which it was taken, the shield has a powerful resistance to magic, making it a reliable defence against offensive spells.
  • Ceres, acquired by completing the Test of Nurture for Ari. The Ceres are boots that carry with them the spark of life, and rejuvenate the land wherever they walk, restoring lush vegetation in even the most barren wastes.
  • Flamus, acquired by completing the Test of Passion for Gorav. The Flamus are gauntlets which empower wearer with a Gorav's flames, igniting their attacks and scorching any that get within their grasp.
  • Laurus, acquired by completing the Test of Combat for Cera. The Laurus is a mighty, wicked spear, laden with barbs and hooks, which is said to have some small measure of sentience which assists the wielder when faced with overwhelming numbers of of opponents.
  • Velox, retrieved from the ashes of Sinas Gloris following his incineration at the hands of Judias Wrathlore. Velox is a single handed falcata-like sword made from mythic gold hilt and praetilium. It seem to shine with their own inner light that make the sword appear as though it is always reflecting the sun's rays, even when it is nowhere to be seen. The legends surrounding Velox claim that Tamis, the Velox's creator and Unex and Sinas' mother, made the sword embody her pride by increasing in power to match any other weapon it came into contact with.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Unex had a tapered build, with squared shoulders slimming down to his thin waist and narrow hips. The left side of his face and neck bore a withering deformity from where he had overexerted himself with necromancy, and the magic had turned to his vitality as fuel. Besides his silver skin, Unex had the general body shape of an alfiz (ancestor elf).

Body Features

Unex's skin was entirely silver, and his body was shrouded in a supernatural mantle of shadows. These shadows moulded to his body as he grew, gradually becoming a second skin, shadow armour which he could withdraw into that spark of divinity within him or allow to flow over him at will.
After completing the Test of Patience for Lilen, Unex also boasted a pair of imposing wings, which his shadow armour adjusted to, turning the feather the colour of the midnight sky.

Facial Features

Unex had hazel eyes that glowed subtly, betraying the divine ember within him. His ears were long and pointed, not unlike those of an alfiz. In truth, these ears were also marks of his divine heritage, similar to those of his mother Tamis and, supposedly, almost identical to the ears his father, Norac, had before he became the skeletal entity he is more famously depicted as.

Special abilities

Unex was always a natural shadow-singer and became a proficient necromancer in his youth. By the time he ascended to High Priest of Death there was little in the way of religious necromancy Unex could not cast. However, his magical prowess only grew with his ascension to Spiritblade. With every blessing came a subtle instinctual affinity for each Senima's own innate magic, making him a multi-faceted cleric by the time he faced the Wrathlore.

Apparel & Accessories

Unex is famously depicted in his Spiritblade regalia. He wore the Saxum, body armour made from plates and rings of Olympic Rock harvested from the divine mines of Mytheria. Over his hands and forearms he wore the black Flamus gauntlets with veins of deep orange, from which jets of flame spouted. Over his feet and shins he wore the Ceres boots, looking as though they were made from simple leather, but for the golden-leafed ivy growing up them. His face was covered by the horrific visage of the Anima, Norac's own helm and mask, so terrifying that it is said that to gaze upon it is to witness one's own demise. This contrasted with the halo of brilliant light that sat just above the crown of his head, giving him the impression of an angel of death, a radiant and terrible sight to behold, beautiful as he was powerful.

Specialized Equipment

Unex is typically depicted wielding the Spiritblade's arsenal, as well as his favoured Velox. Though not part of the Spiritblade regalia, according to the theologists of Dratora, Unex famously slew Judias Wrathlore with Velox, and as such is always shown in Unex's hand in the artworks of him. Velox is a single handed sword that curves downwards halfway along the blade, with the tip of the blade pointed slightly upwards, similarly to a kopis or falcata. Its mythic gold hilt and platinum-hued blade seem to shine with their own inner light that make the sword appear as though it is always reflecting the sun's rays, even when it is nowhere to be seen.
Unex is also depicted carrying the Squama, an iridescent round shield made from overlapping dragon scales that gleams with a sheen of magical protection.
Tied to the base of his spine or slung over his shoulder is the Aegor, a recurve bow that looks aged and weathered, but actually sends arrows flying true after imbuing them with the gift of a magically reinforced pathogen or toxin.
The art often depicts Unex with the Laurus as well as the Velox. Stories differ on why Unex took up Velox from Sinas' ashes, and thus so does the art. In some representations, Unex holds the Laurus in the same hand as Squama and has the shield tied to his forearm to protect him as he thrusts. In other depictions the Laurus sits discarded at Unex's feet, or planted firmly in the ground beside him. Very rarely, normally in sculptures where onlookers can see the art from all perspectives, Unex is presented with the Laurus tied to his back diagonally, held in place by the Aegor slung over the other shoulder, marking his back with a cross of divine weaponry. What is consistent is how the Laurus itself looks in the artwork. In almost every depiction of the Laurus it is shown to be a mid-length spear that could be held in one hand or two, equipped with a spear head covered in multiple barbs, similar to a makrigga. The opposite end of the spear ends with a small ball made from divine praetilium that can be swung as a lightweight club.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Unex was born to an elven woman in the city of Stomexpolis, Decas. Though he was born to Cybele Multin and took her family name, it was evident from the moment he was delivered that his true heritage was far greater. His ears were pointed like an elf's, but far longer than Cybele's, more closely resembling those of an alfiz (ancestor elf). His hazel eyes glowed; not just bright like most elves, but actually emitted a small amount of light. His skin was silver, as though his small form had been shaped entirely out of precious metals, and he'd been alive for no longer than a minute before a shawl of supernatural shadows wrapped itself around him protectively. Divination from the Priesthood of Pride revealed that Unex was indeed the son of Norac, the Senimus of Death, by their patron goddess, the Nu'us Tamis.

Gender Identity

Unex grew up understanding that within him burned two embers of divine power, one from his father and one from his mother. He came to understand the harmony of masculine and feminine within himself as he also came to terms with the gifts he had inherited from both of his parents. Whilst he was brought up as Theodora's son, he gradually came to realise that gender had no bearing in the afterlife, within the halls of the Mortura that his father ruled over. He became distant from his own gender identity until later on in his life, when he came to terms more and more with the idea that he embodied his father in Dratora, and embraced all aspects of that persona, including his male gender.

Sexuality

Unex was pansexual, finding that he was drawn to certain personal characteristics in people, particularly those that resonated with the divine sparks his parents had left within him. He was drawn to the proud and outgoing, as well as those with peaceful demeanours covering an icy temper.

Education

Unex's education began with the Priesthood of Pride, but when he demonstrated far greater talent in the field of necromancy he was instead entrusted to the Priesthood of Death. Later in his life, Unex sought education from other priesthoods and cults devoted to the other members of the pantheon, eager to learn about the differences in their ideologies.

Accomplishments & Achievements

As well as becoming the High Priest of Death and leading the Priesthood of Death in discovering the niche that allowed them to coexist with the rest of society in Dratora, he was also the first to complete a pilgrimage to each Senima's shrine, gather blessings from each one, and ascend to the semi-divine state of Spiritblade. The trials he faced included:
  • Test of Courage for Norac, acquiring the Anima upon its completion. There are no recorded details of this trial.
  • Test of Survival for Taemess, acquiring the Aegor upon its completion. The details of this trial are scarce, but it appears that Unex was infected with a lethal, debilitating ailment and left to traverse the Dead Wood, using only his constitution and knowledge of bushcraft and botany to sustain him.
  • Test of Endurance for Naeten, acquiring the Saxum upon its completion. The details of this trial seem to have been destroyed or lost shortly after the trial was undertaken.
  • Test of Adaptability for Allyce, acquiring the Squama upon its completion. This trial is one of the few that have details recorded about it. Whilst it is not known precisely what Unex faced, the trial was a race along the Divis against a representative of Allyce, a naiad called Flumina. Unex had to contend with the powerful current, unpredictable rapids, and the threats of both demons and the denizens of the deep whilst staying ahead of Flumina, all without wearing armour to allow him to swim freely. Whilst Unex is said to have cobbled together a raft at the beginning of the race, the records confirm that he was swimming when he finished the race.
  • Test of Nurture for Ari, acquiring the Ceres upon its completion. There are no recorded details of this trial
  • Test of Passion for Gorav, acquiring the Flamus upon its completion. The details of this trial seem to have been destroyed some time after Unex's passing during a coup d'etat.
  • Test of Patience for Lilen. This trial is perhaps the only one that is well documented. Unex was asked by Lilen to demonstrate his reliability by catching her a butterfly with wings like glass. She called this butterfly Chaosis, and told him that he must acquire it by any means necessary. The Susurr Wood was dense, and its trees are said to have even changed places to hinder him, but Unex eventually located the butterfly he had been asked to find. It was apparently small, able to sit in the centre of his palm without reaching either edge of his hand, and its wings were transparent and iridescent like oil sat amidst water. He approached it slowly, but at the slightest movement to approach it the butterfly took flight. When it beat its wings a gale of wind propelled it away, strong enough to take Unex off his feet. Try as he did, Unex could not catch the butterfly. Eventually he concluded that the test must be one of precision, and took aim with Aegor in the hopes of skewering it by surprise without being seen. However, for reasons that the records do not elaborate on, Unex did not release his arrow. An epiphany struck him in that moment and, rather than loosing the arrow, Unex put away his weapons and sat in quiet meditation. He slowed his breath such that his inhalation and exhalation hardly created any air current at all. He sat this way until he felt the sun beating down on him from above. When he opened his eyes he saw that the trees had withdrawn from where he sat calmly, creating a clearing around him, and sat delicately in his hands, too light to even feel to the touch, sat Chaosis. He only understood the nature of the test when the shape of Chaosis shifted, growing in size and mass, until it was his own daughter cradled in his arms where moments before the butterfly had landed. Upon completing this trial. Unex was granted a halo and wings, gifting him the status of an angel and the power associated with it.
  • Test of Combat for Cera, acquiring the Laurus upon its completion. The records of this trial are incomplete, but they suggest that Unex had to duel one of Cera's Myrmidons, knights from his paladin order, whom wielded the Laurus themselves.
By acting as the vessel within which each Senimus could pour some of their divine power, Unex became a being more powerful and closer to true divinity than any other demigod had achieved. His soul more closely resembled one from a Nu'us than a mortal. In this state, Unex faced the Diabolos Judias Wrathlore, tyrant of the Nullax and monarch amongst demons, in combat. Even with all of his blessings and divine artefacts, Unex's power still paled in comparison to the Diabolos. It was only when, brought to his knees, Unex took up Velox, Tamis' own divine sword, from the ashes of his fallen companion, Sinas Gloris, and slew the Wrathlore's mortal vessel. With the Wrathlore's body slain, its infernal spirit was banished back to the Nullax, the tunnels between planes sealed, and the world saved from annihilation.

Failures & Embarrassments

The pilgrimage Unex undertook was more challenging than he had expected. For the first time in history, the Senima were scared. They feared what might become of them if they put their faith in a mortal, fearful of the possibility that the mortal would be slain and their gifts of divine power stolen by the Diabolos. The resulting delays born of having to complete trials to convince the Senima meant that Judias Wrathlore reached the dwarves of Collis before Unex could stop it. Many dwarfs were annihilated and Sinas Gloris, another demigod child of Tamis', took it upon himself to stand in their defence, holding back Judias Wrathlore and buying Unex whatever time he could. Supposedly, Sinas slew the entirety of the Judian Caliphate and held his ground against an army of demons, but was finally slaughtered by the Diabolos itself whilst Unex completed the pilgrimage. Sinas' soul was harvested by the Wrathlore; a tremendous loss for the pantheon and the people of Dratora, and a regret that Unex would never shake to his final day.

Mental Trauma

The war against the forces of Judias Wrathlore, the loss of his brother in arms, and his fear for the future, knowing all too well that his victory was merely temporary, took its toll on Unex. He became embittered, refusing to restore the scorched land in Jejune as punishment for the actions of the few residents that had summoned this great evil to Dratora, despite Sinas having slain them all already. His oversight of politics in the Dratoran Isles, and his willingness to crush any potential corruption or infernalism mercilessly, bordered on tyranny. In his later years he committed to standing firmly at the entrance to the Mortura and inspecting the souls of the dead for any signs of corruption, and he trained his daughter Harpina to do the same. Eventually, the trauma and pressure of trying to maintain order in a world naturally filled with entropy led him to doff his artefacts, scatter them around the Isles for another to find, and willingly embrace a mortal death.

Morality & Philosophy

As a Priest of Death, Unex was a firm believer in the ethos that death is inevitable, the vital final stage of life, and should not be feared, pursued, or avoided, but rather accepted when it presented itself to an individual. He lived in peaceful nihilism, admiring the beauty the world had to offer, knowing that it was little more than a fleeting shape in the clouds before the unavoidable time when it would all disappear. However, when the tunnels between the Nullax and Dratora began to open, and Unex saw what demons did to a person on a spiritual level, he adopted a new philosophy. He became fearful of the permanent damage done to the souls of the corrupted and consumed, sickened by it, and could no longer take solace in accepting the chaotic unpredictability of life. He became consumed by a hatred for demons and entropy in general; his once stoic nihilism was replaced by a compulsive demand to bring stability to the world and eradicate anything that threatened what he perceived to be the natural order.

Taboos

From the moment he saw the effect that demons, corruption, and blood magic had on the soul of a mortal, Unex became furiously opposed to any practice that involved affiliating with blood magic or demons, including those that were otherwise accepted by the Priesthood of Death. He stamped it out mercilessly, firstly from within the Priesthood, and then set about snuffing it out from the world once he had ascended to the position of Spiritblade.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Whilst details of his partner are not documented, the records of Unex Multin speak of a daughter, Harpina Multin, who featured in his Test of Patience, having been transformed into the butterfly Chaosis. She reportedly followed in his footsteps, devoting herself to Norac, and in Unex's later years it is said that he charged her with defending the spiritual gate to the Mortura, though details of where this was and what happened to Harpina after this are inconsistent and unproven.
Theologists and historians have also scrutinised the relationship between Sinas Gloris and Unex Multin. The typical story told by the elves of Nostra portray Sinas as a revolutionary elf that aligned himself with a necromancer, with whom he had nothing in common, for the greater good. However, modern understanding suggests that both Unex and Sinas were sons of Tamis, essentially half brothers, and may well have been aware of this fact and possibly even brought together by Tamis herself. This is also cited as a potential reason why Unex took up Sinas' weapon, Velox, to slay the Wrathlore.
