Jeihókans

The Jeihókans1 are one of the five sapient species inhabiting the Znagrúk Empire in southern Dragonía, along with Gláðs, Hyrríans, Úamtnants and Znagrúks. They are renowned throughout the empire for producing rare dyes, fine pottery and good mead.

Appearance and abilities

Jeihókans are among the smallest peoples of Dragonía, quick and dexterous but much weaker physically than their neighbours. They have long tails, three clawed digits on each limb and rows of small, sharp but weak teeth along with prominent fangs, though the latter are mostly for show. Their body is covered in short, soft fur of varying shades of light brown and grey, the only exception being small tufts on their ear-tips and sideburns of sorts on the cheeks. Most Jeihókans have dark stripes on their back as well.
Jeihókans are nocturnal, and thus have relatively large eyes and can see well in the dark, their hearing is sensitive as well while the sense of smell is average at best.

Culture

Apparel

Jeihókan clothing is mostly restricted to simple loincloths and body paint, though married individuals also traditionally wear a metal ring around their neck with strips of cloth attached to it, each signifying the number of children they have.

Cuisine

Jeihókans are primarily insectivores, which their diet reflects, being mostly made up of insects (notably ants, beetles, grasshoppers and bees) and their eggs, larvae and pupae, along with worms, though fish, minced meat and bird eggs are popular as well. Spiders are considered taboo.
Notable dishes include ehynó, a gruel made of finely chopped meat, egg yolks and honeypot ants; yjak, a mixture of chopped larvae, honey and salt; and hón, extremely sweet and strong mead, often dyed blue.

Religion

Jeihókans believe that their ancestors originally lived underground among spirits of the earth, until a trickster deity lured them through caves leading up to the surface. Angered by the people leaving them, the spirits closed off the entrances to the underworld, but eventually allowed the Jeihókans to return there upon death, which is why they lay the dead to rest in caves. The trickster, furious about being stuck on the surface as well, taught the Jeihókans all sorts of vices before turning himself into a spider.

Warfare

Though too frail to directly confront enemies of the empire, Znagrúks often employ Jeihókans as scouts and spies due to their night-vision and excellent hearing.
