Road Rangers
The Hedge Road is long and requires quite a deal of maintenance and protection. The local Baron and their guards can only do so much and so each stretch is also assigned a guardian from an order of rangers, known as the Road Rangers.
Road Rangers are all experienced rangers, usually in the last few years of their careers who ride beast companions that are usually giant boars. Each Ranger and his or her hog is supposed to patrol their assigned stretch of road, keep it in general good maintenance and look out for trouble. If there is trouble the ranger has an allocation of funds available to hire the necessary help to deal with the trouble or maintain the road. This all comes from donations that Rangers are supposed to collect from those who use the Hedge Road. The contribution is voluntary.
Structure
There is an administrative office in Hoofalls that falls under the direct control of the Count of Dorwine. Each Ranger has his or her own budget and stretch of road to administer and, unless there are complaints, they are left entirely to their own devices.
Culture
Most Road Rangers are affable folk who believe in public safety. They are generally well-travelled and great sources of information about the settlements along their stretch of the Hedge Road.
Assets
Some reputable horse traders sell a Road Rangers Guarantee. If a ranger encounters a horse with the guarantee token the horse is entitled to free healing.
