Baron

The title of Baron is awarded to those members of The Council of Barons, the feudal lords who advise the Count of Dorwine. Each Baron is responsible for a Barony, an administrative district within the County and is headquartered in a Citadel. These are usually found in Dorwine’s more significant cities.
Barons can be either male or female and the positions have become, over time, largely hereditary. This is, however, enshrined in tradition rather than law and technically subject to the whim of the Count. In situations where a hereditary tradition is maintained the rules of secession are up to each Baronial family. 
 
Other exceptions to general practice include awarding the title to those without any lands (such as some significant religious or academic leaders) or in a definitively non-hereditary and temporary fashion by way of gift or temporary appointment.

Duties

In addition to advising the Count and administering the law within their Barony, each Baron is also a military leader who must defend his/her lands first and foremost and the County, if called upon. Each Baron is responsible for levying a tax on their Barony and passing on a portion to the royal treasury although the size of that tax and the precise spending beyond the feudal obligations of rank is up to each Baron.
