Septentrio - a.k.a. Wayfinder

Geography

Septentrio or Wayfinder as most call it, can be found by gazing northward into the night sky. Although it is not the brightest star in the heavens it is one of the brighter stars in the northern portion of the sky and is located at the very center of north.   Finding one particular star in the sky can be tricky for the untrained. The best way is to first find the constellation known as Sagitta, as that points directly to Septentrio. Sagitta, also called "The Arrow", is a small grouping of stars known for its five aligned stars that make up the shaft of the arrow. No matter what time of night or location, Sagitta always points the way north.   Of particular interest is the fact that Septentrio does not move or circle around the world as people look up at the night sky, whilst all of the other stars seem to rotate around the world in a circular path during the course of one night. This fixed position serves as the basis for most navigational systems and has saved many lost explorers and adventurers.   Additionally, many Geometricians have concluded that due to its northerly location, it must be located directly over the northern rotational axis, which also accounts for its incremental elevational change as one travels north from the equatorial line. As such, one degree change in latitude corresponds equally to one degree of altitude change in the night sky.

History

While no one can claim to have discovered Septentrio, once astronomers and mathematicians learned of its relationship to the planet, explorers and adventurers quickly devised a system of navigation that heralded an explosion of geographic investigation no longer reliant on pure memory, local features, or inaccurate maps. People could travel farther than ever before, as well as plan long range trips and still find their way home. This greater travel allowed more frequent contact with other locales and the trade of goods, services, ideas, and culture simultaneously increased as well. No longer were people restrained and isolated to where they were, a new freedom of movement was born.
