Human

*NOTICE* The word ethnicity is often used in this article in place of the word race or subrace. This is intentional, as many of the variations of Humans share the same culture. This is not universal, however, and in many cases, ethnicity is used as its actual definition. This will be in context in a section that doesn't use ethnicity as it is used in most of the rest of the article. *END NOTICE*

All Human subraces count as Variant Humans when creating a character.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humans are bipedal two-armed, two-legged, humanoids with two biological sexes (with biological variation). They have a head positioned on a neck above their torse. The torso contains most essential organs behind a ribcage, except for the brain which is contained within the skull.

Genetics and Reproduction

Humans reproduce as most mammals do. Humans have the most internal variation in regards to body markings and shape, with a wider range of skin, hair, and eye colour than any other sapient species.

Growth Rate & Stages

Humans reach adulthood by age 20, though only finish maturing at age 25. They remain at that peak for the next four decades, usually beginning to decay around the age of 55-60. No human has lived past 150, and most die by 125.

Ecology and Habitats

Humans can adapt to anything, creating civilizations anywhere from the Jungle to the Deep Desert to the barren mountain peaks of the Low Peaks.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans require vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates,  & fats, though it is possible for a Human to survive on a vegetarian diet, with reduced mineral intake.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Human facial features and build vary based on ethnicity/race. There is variation within each race, and some are often confused with one another, but in general, the subraces have the following features.
  • Shei tend to have large broad features, and eye colour that ranges from black to green to red. (West & Central Africans)
  • Strati tend to have sharp features with an epicanthic fold, and near-ubiquitous yellow eyes. (East, SouthEast, and North Asians)
  • Lerin are made up fo two distinct groups. The first are identifiable by skin colour ranging from gold to sepia, extremely sharp features, high cheekbones, broad mouths, and an epicanthic fold. The second are generally characterized by almond-shaped eyes, large noses (less ubiquitous), and large mouths. The two are united by a common trait of deep brown and hazel eyes. (Indigenous Latinos & Arabs)
  • Beinar are two different types of humans combined into one classification. The first variety are incredibly variable in regards to skin colour, ranging from extremely pale to extremely dark, and wide-eyed, almost never having the epicanthic fold found in other ethnicities. The second generally have prominent foreheads, eyebrow ridges, and noses. Both have purple eyes with colour inverted pupils and whites. Their identically strange eye colour is the reason these two different groups are believed to be the same subrace. (Aryan & Germanic Descending Peoples [Everyone from Iran to India to Northern Europe] & North American First Nation Peoples)
  • Uaang Zhuole have broad yet slight features in a seeming contradiction, with wide eyes and an incredibly common epicanthic fold. Near all have iridescent pink eyes. (Pacific Islanders)
  • Geitour Hei, like the BeiNar, are thought of in two groups, one which has broad features excepting their sharp mouths, and the second which is near identical to the Strati but for their far wider eyes on average. Again, like the BeiNar, they are united by piercing green eyes whose irises take up most of the whites, leaving barely any visible. (Celts and Tibetans)
Communities of Humans who don't fit into any of these categorizations certainly exist, but not in large enough numbers to be known to most scholars.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Humans are found everywhere in the known world, and likely beyond. Many compare them to rabbits or rodents, reproducing quickly and spreading everywhere.

Average Intelligence

Humans are sapient creatures.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Humans use sight, hearing, touching, taste, and smell. They have no Darkvision.

Civilization and Culture

History

Humans are like rodents. Any place they are brought to, they will infest, and within a few years, they will be impossible to remove. However, they had to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is the southern deserts currently occupied and ruled by Onkonok, the empire of slaves and salt, and the current Bastion of Humanity. Aside from the capital of Akronis, Onkonok's capital of Onkon is the most diverse in terms of all the human variations, with the even ever-unknown Uaang Zhuole found there.

Humans likely originated in the desert or jungles within Onkon, before migrating away due to unknown reasons. Maybe a rise in predators, maybe magical happenings, maybe just competition for space. The ones who stayed in the area are called the Shei. The second notable group, the Strati, migrated Northwest to the plains, mountains, and river valleys of Xixuegui, with ancient stories and records painting a very beautiful picture of what is now called the Deadlands. The Strati are now survived in the cities of Tarnith-Shi, Jeung, other diaspora communities, and the many minor states and kingdoms that surround the Deadlands.

The Lerin are the humans who settled in the Desert of the Saviour and the Dead Ones Mesa. The only Lerin Humans found outside Laran are Larani deserters. The first migrations of humans out of Onkon's deserts were enslaved or assimilated into the growing Makassi empire that would eventually become the Empire of Laran. Beinar as a categorization are barely defined, only grouped together due to eye colour. They are spread extremely widely, with russet and ochre skinned Beinar found across the mountains to the west of the Deadlands, and those with pale skin found in the deep north as traders and raiders. The most common Beinar are found on Dirvan and its hinterlands, differing from their widespread cousins due to a consistently tawny or darker skin colour.

The Uaang Zhuole inhabit the islands in the Endless Ocean south of the Onkon Jungles. Most speculate there is something past those islands, as Dragons had to flee somewhere, however no ship has returned from a deep voyage. The Uaang Zhuole themselves are a tribal people, making their livings off the plentiful fish that cluster the archipelago, and creating small farms. Little is known of their culture as few venture out to the mainland. The Geitour Hei humans, despite being wildly different in appearance from each other, are classified as the same subrace due to their identical eyes and common location, that being the Low Peaks of Zhattar. The pale Geitour Hei live in the Sotteran and are most frequently found in Drow slave pens. A thousand years of war against a slaving race has taught them how to hide from those who seek to subjugate them and steal their land. The black-haired Geitour Hei have a much more symbiotic relationship with the Drow, having welcomed them when they fled, and often sharing their cities with the Drow. Despite this, the higher a settlement in the Low peak's Sunland, the more likely it is to be dominated by Geitour Hei. The Drow always lived underground, so it was these Humans who taught them how to adapt to living high in the Sunlands, and it is the adverse climate they chose rather than the welcoming Sotteran that causes the Drow to leave them alone.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
In terms of body colouration and hair features, Humans again vary by race. These variations are...
  • Shei near all have skin in shades of brown and black, with curly brown hair.
  • Strati near all tend to have straight black hair, though some have dark browns as well. Strati skin tone goes from a pale white to a beige to dark umber.
  • Lerin's two distinct groups have notably different body traits. Those of the first have skin colouring that ranges from gold to sepia, with straight black hair. The second near all have Tauny Beige skin, some being paler and others, particularly those who spend time around magical fonts, having skin that shares the luster of gold. Their hair is usually curly and brown, though a far more muted shade of brown than Shei.
  • Beinar again have two different noticeable different groups. The first only exist as a category due to their common eyecolour. Their skin colour ranges from deep umber to a pale white. Their hair is also anywhere from blonde to red to brown, though skin colour tends to inform hair colour, and red hair is uncommon regardless. The second have skin in shades of brown, ochre, russet, and fawn, with straight black or dark purple hair with purple hair undertones.
  • Uaang Zhuole tend to be larger than most Humans but smaller than BeiNar, with straight black and brown hair & sepia to beige.
  • Geitour Hei's first group have pale white skin and near exclusively curly red hair. The second have tawny skin tones, with straight black hair.
